Tom Cruise undergoes a shocking transformation to play billionaire Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu's upcoming dark comedy, 'Digger.' The first footage, unveiled in Las Vegas, shows Cruise with gray hair and a southern accent, portraying an executive whose company causes an environmental disaster.

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is set to surprise audiences with a drastically different portrayal of Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu's dark comedy, 'Digger.' The initial footage, revealed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 14, 2026, showcases Cruise in a role that renders him nearly unrecognizable.

Cruise's Radical Transformation for 'Digger'

In 'Digger,' Cruise sheds his typical action hero persona for a character described with gray hair, a noticeable stomach, and a distinct southern accent. The teaser footage reportedly shows him in a mansion, attending to a sick cat, before revealing the true nature of his character: a billionaire executive responsible for a major company's environmental disaster, specifically a methane leak that threatens to displace millions.

A Challenging New Role

Director Iñárritu shared that the concept for 'Digger' originated nine years ago, with discussions involving Cruise spanning seven years. He expressed his astonishment at Cruise's embodiment of the character, stating, "Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that." Iñárritu highlighted the unique fearlessness required for this role, suggesting it could be Cruise's most challenging performance yet, even more so than his renowned stunts.

Cruise himself conveyed his excitement for the project, remarking that this was "the kind of movie is why I wanted to make movies." He described the film as "wild" and "funny," eagerly anticipating its release.

The film, slated for a US release on October 2, 2026, also features a stellar cast including Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy.
