India's official Oscar entry, the Marathi psychological thriller 'Gondhal,' will host paid preview screenings in six major Indian cities starting October 9. These previews precede its wider global theatrical release in multiple languages, marking a key step in its Academy Awards campaign.

The critically acclaimed Marathi psychological thriller, Gondhal, India's official submission for the 99th Academy Awards, is gearing up for its global release with a series of special paid preview screenings. These exclusive showings are scheduled across six major Indian cities, commencing October 9, ahead of the film's wider worldwide theatrical debut.

Early Access for Audiences

Audiences in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru will have the opportunity to experience Gondhal on the big screen during these initial previews. Screenings will primarily be in Marathi and Hindi, offering a first look before its extensive multilingual rollout.

Director Santosh Davakhar emphasized that these screenings are more than just early shows. He described them as a vital part of the film's renewed theatrical journey, particularly following its selection as India's Oscar entry. Davakhar urged viewers to approach the film without preconceived notions, allowing its unique cultural backdrop, compelling narrative, and deep psychological elements to resonate.

Global Theatrical Rollout Planned

Following the successful conclusion of the preview screenings, Gondhal is slated for a comprehensive worldwide release. The film will be made available in multiple languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, reaching audiences across India and internationally. The exact date for this wider global release is yet to be announced by the filmmakers.

A Deep Dive into Human Psychology

Inspired by the traditional Gondhal folk ritual of Maharashtra, which weaves together music, dance, mythology, and devotional storytelling, the film uses this rich cultural tapestry as its backdrop. Within this setting, Gondhal intricately explores themes of relationships, desire, human psychology, and darker emotional conflicts.

The film features Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, and Yogesh Sohoni in pivotal roles. Its narrative centers on Suman, a young woman trapped in an unhappy marriage, whose relationship with her lover and involvement with the traditional Gondhal ritual inadvertently trigger a dangerous and unforeseen chain of events.

India's Oscar Hopeful

Gondhal was chosen by the Film Federation of India from a pool of 33 submissions to represent the nation in the coveted Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The film has already garnered significant acclaim on the festival circuit, with Santosh Davakhar earning the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India. Additionally, the film received the prestigious FIPRESCI Award at the Bengaluru International Film Festival.

The Oscar campaign will now intensify, focusing on introducing the film to Academy members. Davakhar indicated that the team anticipates an intensive period of campaigning in the coming months as they seek votes and aim for a place on the Academy's esteemed shortlist.
