The tribute to Raju Srivastava stems from a deeply personal connection to the show's development. Raju Srivastava was the paternal uncle of co-creator Kushal Srivastava. Kushal shared in an interview that his uncle played a pivotal role in his unconventional journey from serving in the Indian Air Force to pursuing a career in filmmaking.
Kushal Srivastava, who dedicated seven years to the Indian Air Force, recounted how he expressed his ambition to achieve global recognition to his uncle. Initially, Raju Srivastava responded with a joke, suggesting he install hand-pumps with his name on them. However, upon realizing Kushal's serious intent to join the film industry, the comedian provided crucial support, helping his nephew secure the necessary permissions to leave the Air Force.
Following his departure from military service, Kushal relocated to Mumbai to embark on his filmmaking career, eventually directing the 2018 film "Vodka Diaries." He later began developing "Operation Safed Sagar" alongside Raju Srivastava's daughter, Antara Srivastava.
From Feature Film to Netflix Series
The project, "Operation Safed Sagar," was initially conceived as a feature film. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a change in plans. Antara Srivastava recalled that the cast and script were already finalized before the team decided to adapt it into a series. Netflix subsequently gave the green light for the project around May 2022.
Tragically, Raju Srivastava passed away in September 2022, just a few months after Netflix approved the series. For his family, this timing imbued the project with profound significance, transforming it into more than just a professional endeavor. Antara Srivastava described it as "the last project Papa knew about," emphasizing its emotional weight as a "family show" reflecting the challenges they faced during its creation.
