Former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi recently opened up about his past relationship with actor Sushmita Sen, vigorously defending her against accusations of being a 'gold digger.' Speaking on a podcast, Modi humorously claimed he was, in fact, the 'diamond digger' in their dynamic.
Modi Praises Sen's Independence and Wealth
Modi described Sen as a "remarkable" and "self-made" woman, emphasizing her financial independence. He noted her success in raising two daughters as a single mother and highlighted her substantial wealth, stating she had accumulated more diamonds than anyone he knew and even owned diamond stores. "There wasn't a time I went out with Sushmita that I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend," Modi recounted, dismissing the 'gold digger' label as entirely unfounded.
He reiterated that their relationship was never about money, asserting that Sen was financially capable of doing and buying whatever she desired, including "anybody she wants on the planet." Modi maintained that Sen was "truly a diamond" and held her in high regard.
The Viral Social Media Post and Its Aftermath
The relationship between Modi and Sen first came into the public eye in July 2022, when Modi shared photographs of them on social media, referring to Sen as his "betterhalf" and hinting at a "new beginning." This post quickly went viral, leading to widespread speculation about their marital status.
Modi soon clarified that they were dating, not married, and recounted sharing the post while sitting next to Sen on a flight. He acknowledged the ensuing public frenzy but stated that neither of them regretted the decision. "We had a beautiful story. It's okay. I don't regret one minute," he concluded, reflecting fondly on their time together and their continued friendship.
