Pahlaj Nihalani, former chief of the Central Board of Film Certification and a veteran film producer, has passed away at 76 after a period of illness. He was known for controversial censorship decisions during his CBFC tenure and for launching actors like Govinda.

Veteran film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. Nihalani had been unwell for some time, reportedly suffering from liver-related health issues, according to his friend Shashi Ranjan who confirmed the news.

A Prolific Producer in Bollywood

Born on January 10, 1950, Pahlaj Nihalani was a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry for decades. He began his career as a producer with the 1982 film Haathkadi. He is widely credited with giving actor Govinda his significant break in the 1986 film Ilzaam and introducing Chunky Panday to the big screen in Aag Hi Aag in 1987. Over his extensive career, Nihalani produced numerous commercial successes, including Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen, Andaz, Dil Tera Diwana, Talaash, Rangeela Raja, and Julie 2.

Controversial CBFC Tenure

Nihalani's tenure as the CBFC chief, from January 2015 to August 2017, frequently made headlines and sparked widespread debate. During his time at the helm, he introduced stricter guidelines that aimed to restrict certain expletives, even in A-rated films, and sought to curb content deemed offensive to religious sentiments or depicting violence. His decisions often led to disagreements with filmmakers and critics, who frequently accused him of overreach and excessive censorship. Nihalani consistently maintained that he was simply fulfilling his duties as mandated by the board.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, the current chairperson of the CBFC, extended condolences via X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Heartfelt condolences from the entire CBFC family on the demise of former CBFC Chairperson Shri Pahlaj Nihalani."

Pahlaj Nihalani's contributions to the Indian film industry spanned several decades, first as a successful producer and later as the head of the country's film certification body. He is survived by his wife, Nita Nihalani, and his three sons, Vishal, Deepesh, and Chirag.
