Zubin Karkaria, the visionary entrepreneur, transformed global mobility when he founded VFS Global in 2001. Identifying significant inefficiencies in embassy visa operations, Karkaria conceptualized a disruptive model: governments could outsource the administrative components of visa processing while retaining their sovereign decision-making authority.
From Concept to Global Dominance
Born and raised in India, Karkaria began his career with the Kuoni Group in 1991, steadily rising through its ranks. His breakthrough idea for VFS Global quickly gained traction. What began as a simple concept to streamline paper-heavy, embassy-controlled visa applications, plagued by long queues and slow turnaround times, evolved into a technology-led global business.
Today, VFS Global is recognized as the world’s largest outsourced visa and consular services company. It operates across more than 140 countries, providing essential visa, passport, identity, and citizen services for governments worldwide. Headquartered in Zurich and Dubai, the company is backed by investment giant Blackstone, solidifying its position as a highly influential player in the global mobility ecosystem.
Leadership and Expansion
Karkaria's career trajectory mirrored VFS Global's rapid expansion. In 2013, he became the first Asian executive appointed to the Executive Board of the Kuoni Group. Two years later, he made history again as the first Asian to lead the venerable 100-plus-year-old Swiss travel company as its CEO, while simultaneously continuing to spearhead VFS Global.
Under his leadership, VFS Global has evolved beyond a mere visa-processing contractor into a comprehensive technology and citizen-services platform. The company has expanded its offerings to include biometric solutions, digital identity systems, document verification, and broader citizen services. This strategic shift has dramatically increased the company's scale, processing millions of applications annually through thousands of application centers globally.
Global Recognition and Future Outlook
Beyond his corporate achievements, Karkaria has established a significant presence in global tourism and travel policymaking. His appointments include positions on the Executive Committee of the World Travel & Tourism Council (2022) and India’s National Tourism Advisory Council (2023).
In 2016, then-French President François Hollande conferred upon him the prestigious “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite” – France’s National Order of Merit – in recognition of his substantial contributions to tourism and travel facilitation. Despite VFS Global's international footprint, Karkaria’s entrepreneurial journey remains deeply rooted in India, where the company launched its first visa processing center in Mumbai.
Looking ahead, Karkaria remains optimistic, asserting that long-term global demand for travel, tourism, education, and skilled migration will continue its upward trend, even amidst geopolitical challenges and tightening immigration policies.
