Zomato & Blinkit's Playful Ad War Sparks Online Buzz: "Why Cook When You Can Order?"

· · 2 min read

Food delivery giant Zomato and quick-commerce platform Blinkit, both owned by Eternal Ltd., have launched a humorous newspaper ad campaign. The "sibling-style squabble" debates cooking versus ordering, sparking widespread amusement online.

Food delivery giant Zomato and quick-commerce platform Blinkit, both operating under the parent company Eternal Ltd., have captured public attention with a clever and humorous newspaper advertising campaign. What began as a simple question about meal preparation quickly escalated into a playful, sibling-style squabble, delighting consumers and sparking online conversations.

The Playful Exchange Unfolds

The campaign kicked off with Zomato posing a relatable question: "Why cook when you can order?" Blinkit, however, was not about to let its "sibling" have the last word. It retorted with a cheeky counter-question: "Why order when you can cook???"

This initial exchange set the stage for a series of increasingly personal and amusing responses. Zomato quickly adopted the tone of an exasperated elder sibling, stating, "Can you behave... people are watching." Blinkit, embodying the younger sibling, brushed off the reprimand with the Hindi phrase, "Bhai behen mein toh chalta hai," implying that sibling arguments are perfectly normal.

Rakhi Demands and Blunt Retorts

The banter continued to mirror a typical family dynamic, even incorporating cultural elements. Zomato playfully demanded, "pehle rakhi bhej" (first send Rakhi), referring to the Raksha Bandhan festival. Blinkit, not missing a beat, responded with, "aur mera gift???" (and my gift???), keeping the lighthearted negotiation going.

The back-and-forth culminated in Zomato telling Blinkit, "mithai kha, sarr nahi" (eat sweets, not my head), a common idiom for telling someone to stop bothering you. Blinkit delivered a final, universally relatable punchline: "can y’all get a life." The exchange left the impression of two siblings who had argued so long they'd forgotten the original point.

More Than Just an Ad Campaign

The humor in this campaign is amplified by the fact that Zomato and Blinkit are not independent competitors but sister companies under Eternal Ltd. This makes their "ad war" less of a corporate battle and more of an amusing internal dialogue playing out in public.

Beyond the entertainment, the campaign subtly taps into a common consumer dilemma: the choice between cooking a meal at home, ordering a ready-made meal, or ordering groceries for home cooking. Zomato champions convenience, while Blinkit playfully defends the act of home cooking.

While the debate for consumers may remain unresolved, Zomato and Blinkit have successfully transformed a conventional newspaper advertisement into a memorable and engaging piece of marketing that resonates with the everyday experience of family dynamics.
