Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu Warns of "Grim" Software Job Outlook, No Pay Hikes

· · 3 min read

Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu stated the software job outlook is "grim" due to rising AI costs and geopolitical challenges. The company will avoid mass layoffs but won't offer pay increases this year, cutting marketing budgets instead.

Sridhar Vembu, Chief Scientist and CEO of Zoho, has issued a stark warning regarding the future of software jobs, describing the outlook as "grim." In a recent social media post, Vembu attributed this challenging forecast to a dramatic increase in artificial intelligence (AI) related costs and an uncertain geopolitical landscape.

Zoho Faces AI Cost Surge and Geopolitical Headwinds

Vembu detailed how AI is significantly impacting operational expenses. He noted a four-fold surge in server prices, essential for data centers, and a rapid rise in AI usage, which is driving up overall costs. Zoho is actively working to control these escalating expenditures. Compounding these technological pressures is a challenging global geopolitical environment, further contributing to business uncertainty.

No Pay Hikes, Marketing Cuts to Avoid Layoffs

In response to these economic realities, Vembu informed Zoho employees that the company would not be implementing its usual pay increases this year. He expressed regret for this decision and apologized to the staff. Additionally, Zoho has reduced its marketing budget. Despite these measures, Vembu affirmed the company's commitment to avoiding mass layoffs, though he reiterated the generally grim outlook for software employment.

The company has not expanded its employee headcount for the past 18 months, indicating a sustained period of cautious growth. Vembu acknowledged that most employees understand the current situation, expressing gratitude for their support as Zoho navigates a period of significant change.

Reinvention Amidst Slowing Growth and AI Alternatives

An internal email from Vembu shed further light on Zoho's challenges, revealing that while the company is still growing at 12%, this pace has slowed more than anticipated in September, particularly concerning new revenue and customer acquisition. Vembu emphasized the need for Zoho to "reinvent" itself, stating that the next three to five years will be critical in determining the success of these efforts.

A notable trend impacting Zoho is customers opting for AI-built software alternatives, often created through "vibe coding" – generating code with simple AI prompts instead of traditional development. This shift underscores the disruptive potential of AI in the software industry.

Vembu's Caution on AI Over-reliance

Despite the advancements in AI, Vembu cautioned against an over-reliance on these tools without a fundamental understanding of the underlying code. He urged engineers to utilize AI tools responsibly, maintaining full comprehension and accountability for the generated code. Zoho is actively working on strategies to reignite growth and adapt to the evolving technological landscape, though a detailed plan is still under development.
