· · 2 min read

Zee Entertainment has secured exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, ending prior uncertainty just ten days before the tournament begins. The deal also includes rights to 38 other FIFA events through 2034, marking a major sports content acquisition.

Zee Clinches India's FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast Rights

Zee Entertainment has successfully acquired the exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India. This last-minute agreement, finalized just ten days before the tournament's kickoff on June 11, resolves months of uncertainty for Indian football enthusiasts, who were among the last major global fan bases without a confirmed viewing platform.

A Complex Road to Agreement

The path to this deal was reportedly challenging. FIFA had initially sought a substantial sum, around $100 million, for a package covering both the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in India. This figure was later reduced to approximately $60 million. Previous contenders included JioStar, the Reliance-Disney joint venture that broadcast the 2022 World Cup, which reportedly offered about $20 million—a bid FIFA rejected. Sony, the broadcaster for the 2014 and 2018 editions, also held discussions but did not submit a formal bid. The financial terms of Zee's final agreement have not been disclosed.

Long-Term Investment in Football Content

Beyond the upcoming 2026 tournament, Zee's comprehensive agreement extends its control over major international football events in India. The deal includes rights to 38 other FIFA competitions scheduled through 2034, positioning Zee as a significant player in the sports broadcasting landscape for the next decade.

New Channels for Enhanced Fan Experience

To support this extensive coverage and deliver an immersive viewing experience, Zee has announced the launch of four dedicated sports channels: Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD. These channels are poised to bring the excitement of FIFA events to fans across the country.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup: A Historic Event

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be a landmark event, marking the first time the tournament will feature 48 teams. Jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it is anticipated to be the largest World Cup in the competition's history. For Zee, this acquisition represents a major strategic entry into premium sports content, ensuring Indian fans will not miss any of the action from this monumental global football spectacle.
