Zee Entertainment Shares Plunge 14% Amidst Warrant Allotment, Debt Questions

· · 2 min read

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) shares dropped over 14% on Monday, extending a four-session losing streak. The tumble follows a preferential warrant allotment and renewed scrutiny over Essel Group's debt repayments.

Shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) experienced a significant downturn on Monday, plummeting over 14% to reach a low of Rs 87 apiece on the BSE. This sharp decline marks the fourth consecutive session of losses for the media conglomerate, bringing its total fall to approximately 17% over that period.

Preferential Warrant Allotment Impact

The recent stock performance comes after ZEEL's preferential issue and allotment committee confirmed the allocation of 2,40,59,266 fully convertible warrants. These warrants, priced at Rs 126 each, were allotted to Sunbright Mauritius Investments Limited, an entity within the promoter group, last week.

The warrant issue price of Rs 126 includes both a warrant subscription price of Rs 31.50 and a warrant exercise price of Rs 94.50. The allottee holds the right to convert these warrants into equity shares, in one or multiple tranches, within an 18-month window from the allotment date, upon payment of the exercise price.

Essel Group's Debt Repayment & Audit Call

Adding to the market's scrutiny, Essel Group (ZEE group) founder Subhash Chandra recently addressed ongoing questions regarding the group's debt, personal guarantees, and insolvency proceedings. On Friday, Chandra stated that the group had successfully repaid approximately Rs 43,000 crore out of its total borrowings of Rs 45,000 crore.

In a notable move, Chandra publicly urged both the banking system and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to commission an independent audit to thoroughly examine the group’s debt position, defaults, and repayment records. This call for transparency aims to clarify the financial standing amidst market speculation.

Founder's Future Role Speculations

Further reports have surfaced suggesting that the ZEE group founder is contemplating taking on a professional role with investment firms based in Switzerland. These unconfirmed reports add another layer of interest to the ongoing developments surrounding the prominent media group.
