Why NRIs Stay Abroad: Investor Cites Quality of Life, Stable Systems Over Money

· · 2 min read

Chicago-based investor Vineeth K explains why many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) choose to remain overseas, responding to Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu. He argues that reliable public systems, cleaner cities, and daily stability are now bigger factors than higher salaries.

Chicago-based investor Vineeth K has offered a detailed perspective on why many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) opt to stay abroad, directly addressing Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu's recent call for them to return to India. Vineeth K asserts that for most NRIs, the decision is no longer primarily driven by higher earning potential, but rather by the quality of everyday life and the reliability of public systems.

Writing from Chicago, Vineeth K highlighted several key reasons that contribute to NRIs choosing to remain in their adopted countries:

  • Consistent Public Systems: Access to reliable and predictable services without constant hurdles.
  • Reduced Corruption: Lower incidence of day-to-day corruption and less reliance on personal connections for basic necessities.
  • Stronger Safety Nets: Better social and financial support systems during emergencies.
  • Improved Civic Discipline: Higher standards of public conduct and adherence to rules.
  • Cleaner Cities & Infrastructure: Well-maintained urban environments and superior infrastructure.
  • Stress-Free Roads: Predictable and less stressful commuting experiences.

“For most of them, it's not just about earning more money, not anymore. That's a very small part of the story,” Vineeth K wrote on X, emphasizing that these factors are not luxuries but fundamental aspects of daily living. He questioned the incentive for overseas Indians to move back, asking, “How long will we just keep pushing the narrative of the homeland?”

Vineeth K also clarified that many Indians abroad have not “left India behind” but have instead built stable lives in environments that offer more predictability. He suggested that those who remain in India can focus on addressing domestic challenges, validating both paths as significant contributions.

This exchange follows Sridhar Vembu's open letter to Indians in America, where he urged them to return and contribute their talent and technological leadership to India. Vembu argued that India's future global standing, prosperity, and security are intrinsically linked to its technological strength, necessitating the return of skilled professionals to guide its young population.

The spirited debate between Vembu and Vineeth K has ignited a broader online discussion concerning migration, career opportunities, quality of life, and the complex factors influencing decisions made by skilled Indians living overseas.
