Visa's AI Layoffs Hit India Hard, Sparking Job Security Concerns

· · 3 min read

Payment giant Visa has eliminated approximately 2,600 positions globally, representing 7% of its workforce, citing an efficiency drive centered on artificial intelligence. India's technology hubs were significantly impacted, with some local units seeing substantial cuts.

Payments technology leader Visa recently announced a significant reduction in its global workforce, cutting around 2,600 jobs, which accounts for about 7% of its total employees. This restructuring, driven by a strategic shift towards artificial intelligence, has particularly impacted India's large technology centers.

Global Cuts and India's Specific Impact

While Visa employs over 3,500 people across its Indian technology and corporate facilities, the company has not disclosed precise local layoff figures. However, reports indicate substantial impact, with one India-based unit of 28 staff reportedly losing 10 members, including senior directors and engineering managers. Affected employees in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad received pre-dawn emails on July 29, followed by rapid deactivation of system access within days. Severance packages and notice periods of 15-30 days were offered.

The job cuts primarily targeted technology and product development teams, underscoring a broader industry trend where AI integration is reshaping workforce needs.

Why AI is Driving Workforce Changes at Visa

Visa states these layoffs are not a response to a business crisis but rather a strategic reallocation of resources towards areas of stronger growth, with artificial intelligence at the core of this plan. CEO Ryan McInerney communicated to staff that the company must evolve its operational methods, with AI accelerating this transformation.

The focus is shifting from AI tools that merely assist human employees to more autonomous “agentic AI” systems capable of performing tasks with minimal human oversight. This evolution raises questions about the number of human roles required to achieve the same or greater output.

A Broader Industry Trend of AI-Driven Restructuring

Visa is not alone in leveraging AI for efficiency-driven workforce adjustments. Other major players in the payments sector and broader tech industry are following similar paths:

  • Mastercard announced a 4% global workforce reduction earlier this year to refocus investments.
  • Fintech firm Block planned to cut nearly 4,000 jobs.
  • Amazon eliminated approximately 16,000 corporate roles.
  • Cloudflare planned over 1,100 job cuts.
  • Atlassian cut around 1,600 positions, reshaping its workforce around AI.
  • Standard Chartered aims to eliminate 15% of corporate-function roles over four years, also citing AI integration.

Top Performers No Longer Immune to Layoffs

The recent cuts have highlighted a new level of job insecurity, even for high-achieving employees. Former Visa employee Arnab Das shared on X that his manager, who had end-to-end product ownership and consistently strong performance reviews, was among those laid off. This anecdote underscores the uncertainty now faced by many in the tech sector.

The Evolving Career Landscape in Tech

For India’s tech workforce, these layoffs signal a fundamental shift from task-based roles to positions demanding higher judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Umesh Kothari, Assistant Dean at SP Jain School of Global Management, emphasized that in a rapidly evolving workplace, the ability to “learn, unlearn, and apply knowledge in new contexts” will become crucial for career resilience.
