India's indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system underwent a significant high-speed test with the Vande Bharat sleeper train, successfully operating at speeds up to 160 kmph. The trial, conducted by Northern Railway, covered a nearly 50-kilometer stretch between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Palwal, completed in approximately 40 minutes.
High-Speed Safety System Put to the Test
The 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train departed Hazrat Nizamuddin at 1:38 pm, arriving in Palwal at 2:21 pm. After a brief 31-minute halt, it commenced its return journey, reaching Hazrat Nizamuddin by 3:32 pm. This marks the first time a Vande Bharat sleeper, equipped with the Kavach system, has been operated at 160 kmph on this specific route.
Kavach is designed to significantly enhance railway safety by providing automatic alerts to locomotive pilots and intervening with automatic brake applications when necessary. This technology is crucial in mitigating risks associated with signal violations and potential human error, preventing collisions and ensuring secure train operations.
Successful Communication and Future Rollout
A critical aspect of the trial was evaluating Kavach's communication system. Railway officials confirmed that communication between the locomotive pilot and station staff remained consistently smooth throughout the entire journey, indicating robust system performance.
While the train largely maintained high speeds, development work on the Faridabad main line necessitated a temporary diversion through a loop line. This operational restriction led to a slight reduction in speed while passing the station, but did not hinder the successful evaluation of the Kavach system under high-speed conditions.
This successful trial follows approximately 30 previous Kavach tests conducted with locomotives on the New Delhi-Palwal corridor. Indian Railways is actively working towards a broader implementation of the Kavach system across its vast network. This expansion is anticipated to bolster overall railway safety, offer additional support to train operators, and further diminish the risks associated with human factors.
