US Tariff Exemption Boosts Indian Pharma; Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's in Focus

· · 2 min read

The United States has exempted specific specialty drugs and ingredients from India from ad-valorem tariffs, providing a significant boost to the Indian pharmaceutical sector. Companies like Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's, and Cipla are poised to benefit from this product-specific relief.

Indian pharmaceutical stocks are in sharp focus today after the US announced a zero-tariff exemption for a select group of specialty drugs and ingredients originating from India. This move is expected to significantly bolster India's pharma exports, particularly for companies engaged in rare disease treatments, infertility solutions, and cell/gene therapies.

US Waives Tariffs on Specialty Drugs

The US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security has issued a notice granting a 0% ad-valorem tariff on certain specialized pharmaceutical and medical products from India. This exemption is part of a broader initiative benefiting 20 countries with existing or forthcoming trade and security framework agreements with the US.

The tariff relief is specifically targeted, covering:

  • Medicines for orphan or rare diseases
  • Infertility treatments
  • Cell and gene therapies
  • Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs)
  • Veterinary pharmaceuticals
  • Components used in the manufacture of these products

It also includes nuclear medicines and plasma-derived therapies, as well as certain medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. Crucially, this is a product-specific exemption and does not constitute a blanket tariff waiver for the entire pharmaceutical sector.

Boost for Key Indian Pharma Players

Several leading Indian pharmaceutical companies are expected to see direct benefits from this development. Firms like Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, and Cipla, which have significant operations in rare disease and specialty therapies, are well-positioned. Sun Pharma and Cipla are known for their infertility treatment drugs, while Biocon and Cipla are active in cell and gene therapy development. Additionally, Zydus Life and Hester Bio, involved in animal pharmaceuticals, also stand to gain.

Strong Sector Performance Amidst Market Volatility

The Indian pharmaceutical sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth. In the fiscal year 2026, India's total pharma exports reached $31.1 billion, with the US accounting for a substantial $9.47 billion—approximately 30.4% of the total. While the broader Sensex index has seen a 13% decline this year, the Nifty Pharma index has surged by 18%, highlighting the sector's robust performance and its ability to outperform in challenging market conditions.

India Among Global Beneficiaries

India is one of 20 countries and jurisdictions whose qualifying pharmaceutical products will receive zero-tariff treatment. Other nations on the list include Argentina, Bangladesh, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. This measure reflects the US's strategic partnerships and its flexibility to address urgent healthcare needs within its borders.
