The U.S. Department of State has initiated a temporary pilot program designed to offer eligible business (B-1) and tourist (B-2) visa applicants the opportunity to secure earlier interview appointments. Under the new Nonimmigrant Visa Expedited Appointment Pilot Program, applicants at select U.S. embassies and consulates can now pay an additional fee of $750 to request an interview slot within 10 business days, subject to availability.
Pilot Program Details and Eligibility
Launched on July 1, 2026, and scheduled to run until December 31, 2026, this program seeks to alleviate existing visa appointment backlogs and address urgent travel requirements. Participation is entirely voluntary, and all applicants will still undergo the standard security screenings and eligibility checks.
To qualify for the expedited option, B-1/B-2 visa applicants must first complete the regular process of paying the standard $185 nonimmigrant visa application (MRV) fee and scheduling a conventional interview appointment. Only then, if the service is available at their specific location and they meet the eligibility criteria, will the “Paid Expedite” option appear.
How the Expedited Appointment Works
- The expedited appointment fee of $750 is separate from the standard visa application fee.
- Participating consular posts will release a limited number of expedited slots daily.
- Applicants must finalize the additional fee payment within 10 minutes of selecting an expedited appointment to secure the slot.
- Expedited appointments cannot be rescheduled once booked. Missing or canceling an appointment results in the forfeiture of the non-refundable and non-transferable $750 fee.
Mexico’s U.S. Embassy and consulates were the first to implement this pilot program on July 21, 2026, with the potential for additional locations to be added during its operational period.
Important Limitations: No Guarantee of Approval
It is crucial for applicants to understand that while the program provides a faster interview date, it offers no guarantee of visa approval or accelerated processing after the interview. The State Department emphasized that all applicants utilizing the expedited option will still be subject to the same rigorous screening and vetting procedures.
“The program allows applicants to receive an earlier appointment only. Every U.S. visa applicant undergoes thorough screening and vetting, and we do not issue a visa until an applicant has demonstrated to the consular officer that he or she is eligible to receive a visa under U.S. law,” the department stated.
The additional fee does not enhance the chances of visa approval, expedite administrative processing, or assure visa issuance. Applicants must continue to meet all requirements mandated by U.S. immigration law.
