US CENTCOM: Iran's Sea Trade Halted by Hormuz Blockade in Under 36 Hours

· · 2 min read

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it has completely halted Iran's maritime trade through its ports in under 36 hours. The blockade, enforced by U.S. forces, has effectively stopped economic activity reliant on sea routes.

The United States military has successfully enforced a comprehensive blockade of Iranian ports, bringing all maritime trade to and from Iran to a standstill, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The operation achieved "maritime superiority" in the Middle East, halting economic activity that Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, stated is crucial for Iran's economy.

Blockade's Immediate Impact

Admiral Cooper confirmed on Wednesday that U.S. forces had completely halted economic trade via sea within 36 hours of implementing the blockade. He highlighted Iran's significant reliance on sea trade, estimating that approximately 90% of its economy is fueled by international maritime commerce. The swift execution demonstrates the effectiveness of the U.S. military's strategy in the region.

Operational Details and Scope

The blockade involved over 10,000 U.S. sailors, Marines, and Airmen, supported by more than a dozen warships and numerous aircraft. CENTCOM reported that U.S. forces are enforcing restrictions on all vessels attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports. In the initial 24 hours of the operation, no ships successfully navigated the blockade, and six merchant vessels were ordered to return to Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman.

These restrictions apply universally to vessels of all nationalities and cover Iranian ports situated on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Despite the blockade on Iranian trade, CENTCOM affirmed its continued support for "freedom of navigation" for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz en route to non-Iranian destinations.

Diplomatic Context and Future Outlook

Amidst these military actions, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the conflict with Iran was nearing its conclusion. In an interview, President Trump linked the situation to Washington's security concerns, particularly regarding Iran's potential for nuclear weapons. He suggested that decisive action was necessary to prevent such an outcome.

The military maneuver comes after recent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions between the U.S. and Iran, including weekend talks in Islamabad. Reports suggest that further negotiations may be on the horizon, hinting at ongoing diplomatic engagement despite the intensified military pressure.
