US Outlines Key Economic Priorities for India
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has emphasized the critical need for India to adopt predictable taxation policies and strengthen intellectual property (IP) protection. Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Ambassador Gor highlighted these as essential steps to deepen the economic partnership between the United States and India.
Addressing “Friction Points” for Stronger Partnership
Ambassador Gor identified several “friction points” in the bilateral economic relationship that require joint attention, including taxation, regulatory frameworks, export controls, technology flows, and intellectual property protection. He stressed the importance of a candid, trust-based engagement to resolve these issues.
“We need predictable taxation and regulatory frameworks that allow business to thrive,” Gor stated. He added, “And we need rock-solid intellectual property protections.” According to the Ambassador, stronger IP safeguards would provide companies with the confidence to invest, innovate, and expand their operations in India without fear of their creations being compromised.
Building Trust and Combating IP Concerns
Acknowledging that international companies sometimes voice concerns about intellectual property theft in India, Ambassador Gor reiterated the US’s trust in the nation. He cited India's role as a major source of generic pharmaceuticals for the US, supplying approximately 40% of its needs, as a testament to this confidence. Furthermore, he pointed to a 40% increase in LNG and LPG trade between the two countries over the past year as another indicator of growing trust and collaboration.
Ambitious Trade Goals and Integrated Value Chains
The Ambassador noted the remarkable growth in India-US trade, which has surged from approximately $20 billion to over $240 billion in just over two decades. Looking ahead, both nations share an ambitious goal of reaching $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, a target that reflects the vast untapped potential in their economic relationship.
Gor underscored the strategic importance of US-India cooperation across vital sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced technology, aerospace, defense, and energy. He concluded by explaining that when the United States and India collaborate, they effectively integrate value chains, accelerate breakthroughs in critical technologies, and bolster supply chain resilience globally.
