The traditional model of hiring domestic help is undergoing a significant transformation in urban India. Families in cities like Noida and Gurugram are increasingly opting for app-based services, moving away from conventional arrangements in search of greater reliability and structured service.
Why the Shift to App-Based Services?
For years, households relied on independent domestic workers, often leading to challenges like irregular attendance, last-minute leaves, and communication issues. App-based platforms address these pain points by offering fixed timings, transparent rating systems, a clear complaint process, and enhanced accountability.
Piu Bhattacharya, an HR head from Mumbai, shared her frustrations with traditional arrangements. "There have been days when I had to head to an important meeting and she informed me at 8:30 am that she will not be able to come," she recounted. "Imagine the last minute horror. My food is not ready, the house is in a mess, I feel so helpless." This unpredictability often forced her to tolerate inconsistencies, fearing the worker might leave entirely.
Security guards in gated communities across Noida and Gurugram have observed a noticeable surge in app-based workers. A guard at Cleo County in Noida noted an "exponential rise" in recent months, with dozens of such workers entering towers daily—a stark contrast to previous trends.
Reliability Over Familiarity
For households balancing jobs, children, and elderly care, a domestic worker's absence can disrupt the entire day. Charu Sahay, a teacher from Noida, described the "plain harassment" of frequent sick calls. "She knows our situation, yet she doesn’t think twice before taking leave at the last minute," Sahay stated, highlighting the financial and logistical burden of finding replacements.
Sahay now uses app services for backup and is considering a full switch, while Bhattacharya has already made the transition, finding relief in the consistent service, even if it requires some planning for slots.
Domestic Workers Adapting to New Demands
This shift isn't only from the employer's side; domestic workers are also adapting. One worker associated with a platform noted a significant increase in demand, now securing "at least eight hours of work daily" compared to three or four duties previously. Another worker mentioned accelerated onboarding processes and referral bonuses offered by companies like Urban Company, indicating rapid expansion in the sector.
The New Normal for Household Management?
Industry experts believe this convenience is fundamentally altering user behavior. Surajit Dasgupta, a senior product manager, suggests that once users experience the ease of these services, they are likely to continue, even if prices increase as companies scale. He anticipates a shift from occasional use to daily dependence, potentially impacting the bargaining power of traditional domestic workers.
While app-based services offer standardization and efficiency, questions remain about worker security, earnings, and the long-term sustainability of personal domestic work within a standardized framework. Nevertheless, it's clear that for a growing number of urban Indian families, app-based domestic help is transitioning from a backup option to an integral part of daily life.
