- Cambodia
Cambodia notably became the ninth country to support UPI merchant payments in June 2026. This integration, part of the India-Cambodia payment linkage, allows Indian visitors to scan Cambodia's KHQR codes at over 4.5 million participating merchants, significantly easing transactions.
However, it is crucial for travelers to understand that even in these nine countries, UPI acceptance is limited to participating merchants and specific locations. Users should look for compatible BHIM UPI or partner-network QR codes.
Remittances in Greece and Maldives
While most countries support direct merchant payments, Greece and the Maldives currently facilitate cross-border remittances rather than routine QR-based shopping payments.
- Greece: UPI went live in Greece for remittances through Eurobank in 2026, enabling eligible users to transfer money between Greece and India.
- Maldives: The Maldives' instant payment system, Favara, was linked with UPI on July 30, 2026, also primarily for cross-border transfers.
How to Use UPI for International Transactions
To use UPI abroad where merchant payments are supported, Indian travelers need to follow a few simple steps:
- Activate UPI Global: Users must activate "UPI Global" or "UPI International" for an eligible bank account through their supported UPI application.
- Scan and Pay: At the destination, look for a compatible BHIM UPI or partner-network QR code.
- Review Transaction: Scan the QR code and carefully review the transaction details, including the amount in both the foreign currency and Indian rupees, along with the applicable exchange rate and any charges.
- Enter PIN: Confirm the payment by entering your UPI PIN.
