UPI's Global Footprint Expands to 12 Nations
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a digital payment platform developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has achieved significant international expansion. Launched on April 11, 2016, UPI has become one of the world's most successful digital payment systems, now operational in 12 countries beyond India.
This global rollout reflects India's growing influence in financial technology and digital payments. Indian travelers and businesses can now utilize UPI for merchant payments in a growing list of nations, reducing the need for physical cash and traditional international card networks while simplifying cross-border transactions.
Rapid Growth and International Adoption
Over the past five financial years, UPI transactions have seen explosive growth. Starting with 4,595.61 crore transactions amounting to ₹84.16 lakh crore in FY 2021–2022, volumes surged to 18,586.60 crore transactions by FY 2024–2025. This domestic success paved the way for its international expansion, driven by partnerships between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), foreign governments, banks, and payment service providers.

Beyond simplifying payments for tourists, the platform is expected to facilitate cross-border trade, improve remittance flows, and offer a faster, more cost-effective alternative to traditional payment mechanisms.
With more countries anticipated to integrate or adopt the system, UPI is increasingly recognized as one of India's most successful technology exports and a crucial tool for its digital diplomacy on the world stage.
