A school principal in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, has been barred from the premises and the institution's recognition is being revoked following a viral video showing her aggressively confronting a parent over school supply purchases. The incident, which occurred on April 24, quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking widespread outrage.
Confrontation Over Notebook Purchases
The controversy began when Neelam Verma, a parent whose daughter Alisha studies in UKG, sought to pick up her child from school. Verma stated she had already acquired the necessary course materials but was pressured by the school to purchase four additional notebooks, costing approximately ₹1,200, exclusively from a vendor designated by the school.
When her daughter began returning home without homework due to the lack of these specific notebooks, Verma approached the principal, requesting a 15-day extension to procure them. According to Verma, the principal, identified in reports as Mamta Mishra, refused the request, used derogatory language, calling her "illiterate" and "uncultured," and repeatedly threatened to remove the child's name from the school rolls with phrases like "shut up" and "naam kaat do" (cut the name).
Public Outcry and Netizen Reactions
The video, initially shared within a school WhatsApp group, quickly went viral, drawing strong condemnation from netizens. Many users expressed frustration over the perceived exploitation of parents by private educational institutions and the lack of accountability. Comments highlighted the financial pressure on middle-class families and called for government intervention to regulate private schools and ensure parental committees have empowered voices.
"This is exactly why India's middle class feels trapped. We pay taxes for failing govt schools, then get bullied by private ones for daring to save a few rupees on books. Shut up, naam kaat do the mask of education slips, revealing pure business and power trip. Parents aren't customers; they're hostages to their children's future," one user commented.
Principal's Clarification and Official Response
Days after the video gained traction, Principal Mamta Mishra issued a clarification, acknowledging her "harsh language" but claiming the parents were pressuring her to reduce school fees. She defended the school's fee structure, stating that the primary class fee of ₹1,300 was not unreasonable. Mishra also mentioned the incident occurred during a vaccination drive and she had asked the parent to discuss the matter later.
However, authorities quickly took action. Neelam Verma filed a complaint with the District Magistrate via the IRGS portal, a state-level online grievance system. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Dr. Ajit Singh confirmed that a preliminary enquiry was launched, with a three-member team investigating the allegations. The probe revealed "several inadequacies," leading to the initiation of proceedings to revoke the school's recognition.
Dr. Singh emphasized that private schools would not be permitted to exploit parents and stated that any collusion between schools and bookstores would also be investigated. The Hardoi administration has announced it will monitor private schools throughout the district. The principal has been barred from entering the school premises pending further action.
