Indian Railways has announced a significant upgrade to rail connectivity in Uttar Pradesh, particularly benefiting passengers and pilgrims ahead of the Raksha Bandhan festival. The Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh–Kanpur Central Intercity Express (train numbers 14123 and 14124) has been extended to Chitrakoot Dham Karvi.
Direct Connectivity to Sacred Sites
The extension means devotees traveling to Lord Kamtanath Dham and for the Chitrakoot Dham parikrama will no longer need to change trains multiple times. This direct link is a major relief for residents of Amethi and surrounding areas who frequently visit these pilgrimage sites.
Enhanced Capacity and Route
In addition to the extended route, the train's capacity has been substantially increased. The number of coaches has been doubled from 12 to 24, allowing it to carry twice as many passengers. This aims to ensure more confirmed seats and smoother travel experiences.
Following the extension, the train will operate under the new name, "Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh–Chitrakoot Dham Karvi Express." Its route will now encompass major stations including Rae Bareli, Lucknow, Kanpur, Hamirpur Road, Banda, and Atarra. Local stations like Antu, Amethi, Gauriganj, Kasimpur, Jais, and Fursatganj will also benefit from direct connectivity to Chitrakoot.
Political Context and Regional Impact
This development comes months before Uttar Pradesh's upcoming Assembly elections in 2027. The ruling BJP has highlighted the extension as a key regional development, crediting former Union minister Smriti Irani's efforts. The move is being presented as a boost to pilgrim-friendly infrastructure in Purvanchal and central UP, aiming to influence voter sentiment through improved railway connectivity and pilgrimage facilities.
Local tourism is also expected to receive a significant boost from the doubled capacity and the new direct link between Pratapgarh, Amethi, and Chitrakoot, making travel more convenient for both devotees and tourists.
