In a remarkable agricultural success story from Uttar Pradesh, farmer Sandeep Chaudhary of Saharanpur has sold four Miyazaki mangoes for an astonishing ₹2.11 lakh. The high-value transaction, involving one of the world's most expensive mango varieties, has brought significant attention to Chaudhary's innovative farming practices.
The unique sale saw Surat-based trader Praveen Gupta purchase the approximately one-kilogram batch of mangoes. What made the deal particularly notable was Gupta's decision to dedicate the purchase to his mother, a gesture that resonated with the spirit of 'Ek ped maa ke naam' (One tree in mother's name).
A Unique Transaction and Heartfelt Dedication
Chaudhary revealed that the initial price for the four prized mangoes was set at ₹3.5 lakh. However, upon learning of Gupta's intention to honor his mother, Chaudhary reduced the final price to ₹2.11 lakh. An initial payment of ₹1.11 lakh has already been received, with the remaining ₹1 lakh due upon delivery on August 1st.
This isn't the first time Gupta has shown interest in Chaudhary's produce; he had attempted to buy the mangoes last year, but they were sent to the Chief Minister at that time. The current deal marks a significant milestone for both the farmer and the niche market for luxury produce in India.
From Mockery to Miyazaki Mango Success
Sandeep Chaudhary's journey began three years ago in Tharoli village when he decided to cultivate Miyazaki mangoes, moving beyond traditional crops. His vision was to demonstrate that farmers could significantly increase their income by embracing expensive and specialized varieties. Initially, his efforts were met with skepticism and mockery from those who doubted mangoes could command such high prices.
Despite the doubts, Chaudhary persevered. He now boasts around 40 Miyazaki mango trees, and this recent sale stands as a testament to his dedication and foresight. The Miyazaki variety is renowned for its distinct red-purple hue, exquisite taste, and superior nutritional profile, containing higher levels of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, and antioxidants compared to common mangoes.
Buoyed by his success, Chaudhary has pledged to donate 10 percent of his earnings from this sale to help underprivileged individuals. He also encourages other farmers to explore organic and high-value crops alongside their conventional farming methods, advocating for a shift towards more profitable and sustainable agricultural practices.
