· · 2 min read

A vigilance raid on former Uttar Pradesh ARTO Lalit Kumar's Lucknow residence uncovered assets valued at approximately Rs 35 crore, including Rs 1.62 crore in cash, 13 kg gold, and 9 kg silver. The former Agra-posted official faces an ongoing investigation for disproportionate assets.

Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Uncovers Massive Wealth

Lalit Kumar, a former Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) previously posted in Agra, is under intense scrutiny following a vigilance raid on his Lucknow residence. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment conducted searches on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8, 2026, uncovering assets estimated to be worth a staggering Rs 35 crore.

During the extensive search operations at Kumar's home in Chandralok Colony, Aliganj, investigators recovered Rs 1.62 crore in cash, reportedly hidden in various packets. The team also seized approximately 13 kg of gold, presented in bars, bricks, and assorted jewelry, alongside nearly 9 kg of silver, comprising bars, biscuits, and ornaments. A government-approved valuer assessed the combined worth of the recovered gold, silver, and jewelry at around Rs 20 crore.

Properties and Investments Across the State

Beyond the cash and precious metals, vigilance officials also found documents pertaining to numerous movable and immovable assets. These include residential houses and plots located in Lucknow, agricultural land spread across Lucknow, Barabanki, and Rae Bareli districts, and bookings for flats in both Lucknow and Noida. The total value of these immovable properties is estimated at Rs 13 crore.

Further investigation revealed documents detailing investments exceeding Rs 1 crore across various financial instruments, including bank deposits, post office schemes, mutual funds, and fixed deposits. Additionally, two cars—a Toyota Innova and a Hyundai i20—along with a revolver and an inventory of expensive household furnishings, were recovered.

Disproportionate Assets Case Under Investigation

Lalit Kumar had previously been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A vigilance inquiry had allegedly found that he had accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The current case is being rigorously investigated by the Lucknow Sector of the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment, acting on directives from the state government.

The Vigilance Establishment confirmed that the total estimated value of all recovered assets—cash, precious metals, jewelry, investments, and both movable and immovable properties—stands at approximately Rs 35 crore. All suspected disproportionate assets are currently undergoing verification and will be incorporated into the ongoing investigation before further legal action is pursued. In recognition of their efforts, the Director General of Police and Director, Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment, has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the Lucknow Sector team that executed the successful searches.
