Union Minister Backs CSS Shield for Bereaved Families
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, has thrown his support behind the newly formalized 'CSS Shield' initiative. Launched by the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) Forum, the program aims to provide crucial financial assistance and dignified support to the families of deceased CSS officers.
Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of collective efforts in creating a culture of solidarity for families facing sudden loss. He highlighted that such initiatives reflect the broader government objective of making service rules more sensitive and responsive to the needs of employees and their dependents.
A Structured Mechanism for Support
The 'CSS Shield' formalizes a system of mutual assistance that CSS members had already been undertaking voluntarily, especially after the experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, CSS officers have collectively contributed approximately ₹1.30 crore, aiding 65 to 70 families of officers who passed away.
Under the structured 'CSS Shield,' the Forum aims to provide at least ₹15 lakh to each bereaved family. With an estimated 13,000 CSS members, there are plans to significantly expand this support as participation grows.
Future Expansion: Scholarships and Beyond
Dr. Singh also suggested potential future expansions for the initiative, including the possibility of establishing scholarships for the children of deceased CSS officers. This would ensure that support extends beyond the immediate aftermath of a loss, contributing to the long-term welfare and education of the families.
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to continually review and modify existing service provisions to meet contemporary requirements, noting that several such changes have already been implemented in recent years.
