Cabinet Greenlights Major Infra Push
The Union Cabinet has given its nod to two significant infrastructure projects totaling ₹14,115 crore, aimed at bolstering connectivity and easing traffic congestion in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The initiatives include the construction of an eight-lane tunnel connecting Delhi with Haryana and a six-lane greenfield highway between Saharanpur and Ambala.
These approvals underscore the government's commitment to enhancing national infrastructure, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people, and stimulating regional economic growth. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be responsible for the execution of both projects.
Delhi-Haryana Tunnel: A Key Decongestion Strategy
A substantial portion of the approved funds, approximately ₹7,485.46 crore, is allocated for the construction of a 3.4-kilometer-long, eight-lane tunnel. This crucial link will be part of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), designed to connect National Highway 1 (NH-1) and National Highway 8 (NH-8) within Delhi.
The tunnel is expected to play a vital role in decongesting Delhi's bustling urban areas, particularly by providing a direct and faster route to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. It will significantly reduce travel time for commuters heading to the airport from northern parts of Delhi and Haryana, offering a more efficient alternative to existing routes.
Saharanpur-Ambala Highway: Boosting Regional Access
The second major project, valued at approximately ₹6,629.62 crore, involves the development of a 104-kilometer-long, six-lane greenfield highway. This new corridor will connect Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh with Ambala in Haryana, replacing parts of the existing NH-73A.
This highway is anticipated to dramatically cut travel times between Delhi, Saharanpur, and Ambala, thereby improving inter-state connectivity. It will not only benefit passenger traffic but also facilitate faster movement of goods, providing better access to industrial and agricultural centers in both states. The project is poised to unlock new avenues for economic development and trade in the region.
