UK Man Swallows £35,000 Diamond Ring in London Jewellers, CCTV Leads to Recovery

· · 2 min read

A man allegedly swallowed a £35,000 diamond engagement ring at Elegance Jewellers in London's Hatton Garden. Store owners reviewed CCTV, confronted him, and he subsequently regurgitated and returned the ring.

A bizarre incident unfolded at Elegance Jewellers in London’s historic Hatton Garden jewellery district when a man, posing as a customer, reportedly swallowed a diamond engagement ring valued at approximately £35,000 (around 40 lakhs Indian rupees).

Staff at the renowned London establishment recounted how the man spent nearly two hours meticulously examining various rings. During this time, he was observed suddenly placing a large princess-cut diamond ring into his mouth and swallowing it. When employees later noticed the high-value item was missing, they questioned the individual, who vehemently denied any wrongdoing and even offered to have his pockets searched.

CCTV Footage Changes Everything

The situation took a dramatic turn when the shop owners decided to review their extensive CCTV surveillance footage. The cameras clearly captured the man's actions, leaving no doubt about the audacious theft. Armed with this irrefutable evidence, the owners confronted the suspect and informed him that the police had been contacted.

Faced with the undeniable proof, the man reportedly put his fingers down his throat, regurgitated the diamond ring, and handed it back to the staff. Security personnel from Hatton Garden then escorted him from the premises.

Shop Owners Express Disbelief

“I still can’t believe someone could swallow such a large ring — I can’t even swallow a tablet without water,”

Junaid Hasan, a worker at Elegance Jewellers, expressed his astonishment at the incident. His father, Syed Hasan, who was directly assisting the man at the time, noted that the suspect initially became loud and defensive but swiftly changed his demeanor once presented with the CCTV evidence.

Police Report Filed, Warning Issued

Elegance Jewellers confirmed they reported the incident to the police on the same day, though it remains unclear whether an arrest was subsequently made. The shop, which has been a fixture in Hatton Garden for over three decades, issued a strong warning to other jewellers in the area to remain vigilant. They described the suspect’s behaviour, including a pre-saved contact on his phone for a potential getaway, as indicative of a professional rather than an amateur thief.

The incident has drawn significant attention within London’s jewellery community, prompting Elegance Jewellers to share the CCTV footage publicly. Their aim is to raise awareness among peers and the public about such methods and the ongoing risks faced by staff and customers in the industry.
