UAE Green Visa: Five-Year Residency Without Employer Sponsorship for Professionals

· · 3 min read

The UAE Green Visa offers skilled professionals, freelancers, and investors a five-year residency without employer sponsorship. Introduced in 2022, it also allows family sponsorship and a six-month grace period after cancellation.

Understanding the UAE Green Visa

The United Arab Emirates introduced its Green Visa in 2022 as part of a comprehensive update to the nation's visa framework. This permit grants eligible individuals a five-year residency without the necessity of employer sponsorship, a significant departure from traditional work visas. It aims to attract and retain talent, offering greater flexibility and control over one's status in the country.

Who Qualifies for the Green Visa?

The Green Visa is available under three primary categories, each with specific requirements:

Skilled Professionals

To be eligible as a skilled worker, applicants must hold a valid employment contract and a skilled worker permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). Employment by a government, semi-government, or free zone entity also qualifies. Candidates must fall under Skill Levels 1, 2, or 3 in MOHRE's occupational classification, possess at least a bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification, and earn a minimum monthly salary of Dh15,000.

Freelancers and Self-Employed Individuals

For those working independently, a freelancing or self-employment permit from MOHRE is required. Applicants must hold at least a bachelor's degree, a specialized diploma, or an equivalent qualification. A crucial financial requirement is demonstrating stability throughout the residency period, including an annual freelance income of no less than Dh360,000 in the two years preceding the application, or an equivalent sum in foreign currency.

Investors and Business Partners

Entrepreneurs and investors seeking the Green Visa must provide clear proof of their investment or active partnership in a UAE-based project. This category also necessitates all relevant licenses and approvals from the appropriate authorities within the UAE.

Application Process and Costs

The application for a Green Visa involves specific fees that vary based on the applicant's category and current residency status. The standard Green Visa work permit application fee is Dh200, plus an additional five percent VAT. For applicants already residing in the UAE, further charges apply: a Dh10 Knowledge Dirham fee, a Dh10 Innovation Dirham fee, and an in-country application fee of Dh500. It is important to note that the total amount may fluctuate based on individual circumstances and any additional processing requirements.

A critical piece of advice for current UAE residence visa holders is to refrain from canceling their existing visa until their Green Residence permit has received formal approval.

Key Benefits of the Green Visa

Beyond the extended five-year residency term, the Green Visa offers several compelling advantages. It eliminates the need for employer sponsorship, granting holders significantly more autonomy over their professional and personal life in the UAE. Key benefits include the ability to sponsor first-degree family members and dependents, a generous grace period of up to six months after visa cancellation to remain legally in the UAE, and the flexibility to work as a skilled professional, freelancer, entrepreneur, or investor without being tied to a single employer's sponsorship.
