Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe indicated he won't enter politics soon, stating public service and political roles demand different challenges. He made the remarks at Business Today's India @ 100 event on August 21, 2026.

Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has signaled he has no immediate plans to enter politics, emphasizing the distinct challenges that separate public service from political life. Speaking at Business Today's India @ 100 event on August 21, 2026, Mundhe, known for his forthright approach, addressed speculation about his future.

Mundhe on Politics and Public Service

During an interaction, Mundhe was asked about a potential shift into the political arena. He responded, "No way. Iske baad maybe. That's also public service." He further elaborated that if he excels in one area, he believes he should continue in it. Mundhe underscored that political roles present an entirely different set of demands compared to his current responsibilities as a bureaucrat.

When questioned about his favorite Chief Minister, Mundhe stated, "Everybody is my favourite." He explained that a Chief Minister represents the public's will and makes decisions accordingly, and as a bureaucrat, his role is to implement those decisions, even if he privately holds differing views.

Work Culture at Maharashtra FDA

Mundhe also provided insights into the operational culture within the Maharashtra FDA. He confirmed that all officers adhere to labor laws, working a standard 8 hours a day, not exceeding 48 hours per week. He clarified that each staff member works only one shift. However, he noted that FDA employees work 6 days a week, distinguishing it from other offices, as it functions as a 24x7 laboratory.

He articulated the core mission of the FDA: "The food and drugs consumed by a person have to be safe, efficacious, and standard. That's the output we are expecting, and the outcome is healthy people. That's the goal. That's the level at which you have to think and work, and strategize accordingly. That's what we're trying to do."

Mundhe's Public Reputation and Impact

In his tenure as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner, Mundhe has garnered significant public favor for his no-nonsense style and direct engagement. Within three months of his appointment, the Maharashtra FDA conducted over 3,000 inspections, resulting in the seizure of goods valued at more than ₹55 crore. Additionally, approximately 165 food business operators (FBOs) had their licenses suspended, and over 750 improvement notices were issued, reflecting his rigorous enforcement efforts.
