Travis Kalanick's ATOMS Secures $1.7 Billion for Industrial AI Venture

· · 2 min read

Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has launched ATOMS, an industrial AI company, securing a $1.7 billion equity investment led by Andreessen Horowitz. The venture aims to digitize and transform sectors like manufacturing, logistics, and food production.

Nearly a decade after his departure from Uber, entrepreneur Travis Kalanick is making a significant return to the tech scene with his new company, ATOMS. The venture, which has been operating in stealth for over eight years, recently announced a substantial $1.7 billion equity investment.

The funding round was spearheaded by influential Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), bringing co-founder Ben Horowitz onto ATOMS' board. Additional equity participants include Bain Capital, Uber, Fifth Wall, Chemistry, A*, K5 Global, Abstract, SV Angel, and Alpha Square Group. ATOMS has also secured debt financing from major financial institutions such as Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, and Barclays.

For Kalanick, this investment represents more than just capital; he describes it as a culmination of a long-held vision. He noted a near-partnership with Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz during Uber's early days in 2011, making this new collaboration a form of "unfinished business" that fuels his "bits-to-atoms" journey, a concept he began with Uber and continued with CloudKitchens.

ATOMS: Digitizing the Physical Economy

Kalanick envisions ATOMS as the realization of a 16-year ambition to digitize the physical world. While Uber revolutionized urban transportation by creating a software network for moving people, and CloudKitchens modernized food production, ATOMS aims to build "atoms-based computers" for entire industrial sectors. The company targets industries largely untouched by digital transformation, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Logistics
  • Food production

Kalanick believes ATOMS has the potential to fundamentally transform the world's physical economy. He asserts that the next wave of economic growth will stem from digitizing the physical economy, rather than just information.

"Industrial AI is getting ready to power the next Industrial Revolution. Tesla calls it Amazing Abundance. We call it the Age of Atoms," Kalanick stated, highlighting his ambitious outlook for the company's impact.
