Mumbai's Rail Network Set for Major Transformation
Mumbai's iconic suburban railway network, a lifeline for millions, is slated for a significant overhaul with the introduction of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local train rakes. The first of these modern trains is projected to begin services in 2027, marking a pivotal moment for daily commuters in the bustling metropolis.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the decision, acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for facilitating this crucial upgrade. Fadnavis emphasized that the new fleet would dramatically enhance the commuting experience, addressing long-standing issues of overcrowding and discomfort.
Accelerated Production and Key Features
The procurement plan for these 238 AC local trains features a strategic shift: manufacturing will be distributed across three major Indian Railways production units. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, and Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli will collectively produce the new rakes. This decentralized approach aims to accelerate delivery timelines, after previous procurement processes faced delays that could have pushed the project's completion towards 2030.
Sanctioned under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-III and MUTP-IIIA, the initiative represents an investment of an estimated ₹19,293 crore. Each of the 238 rakes will comprise 12 cars, designed to significantly boost passenger-carrying capacity across Mumbai's expansive suburban network.
A crucial safety enhancement integrated into the new trains will be automatic door-closing systems. This feature is particularly vital for Mumbai's often-overcrowded trains, aiming to mitigate risks associated with open doors during peak travel hours.
Enhanced Comfort and Safety for Millions
The scale of this expansion underscores Mumbai's profound reliance on its suburban trains. Official Railway data indicates that Western Railway and Central Railway collectively operate over 3,200 suburban services daily, including 227 existing AC local services as of April 2026. The new fleet will substantially increase the availability of air-conditioned travel.
