Starting August 1, the West Central Railway is introducing a significant change to its Tatkal ticket counter booking process. This new token-based system aims to streamline reservations, reduce long queues, and combat the misuse often associated with last-minute ticket purchases.
New Token System for Counter Bookings
Under the revised arrangement, passengers seeking Tatkal tickets at physical reservation counters will no longer directly crowd the windows. Instead, they will first receive a token and then be called forward in an organized sequence. This shift is designed to create a more orderly and transparent booking experience for all.
The new system specifically targets counter bookings within the West Central Railway zone and does not alter the existing Tatkal ticket booking times.
Token Distribution and Timings
Tokens for AC class Tatkal tickets will be distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes, tokens will be issued from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Each reservation counter will have a limit, issuing 10 tokens for AC Tatkal and 15 tokens for non-AC Tatkal bookings.
Passengers must still adhere to the standard Tatkal booking windows: 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes, one day prior to the journey date.
Priority Categories and ID Requirements
The West Central Railway has established two priority categories for token distribution:
- Category A: Passengers booking tickets for themselves or immediate family members. These individuals will receive priority service. They must carry their own valid photo ID and an identity document for family members that proves the relationship.
- Category B: All other passengers, who will be served only after all Category A bookings are completed. Individuals in this category must present an Aadhaar card or another valid photo identity card recognized by the Railways.
Officials emphasize that tokens are strictly non-transferable, and tickets will only be issued to the person whose name is associated with the token.
Combating Misuse and Improving Experience
A key objective of this new system is to curb the activities of touts and agents who often exploit the Tatkal system by monopolizing queues. By requiring original ID proof for token issuance and printing passenger details on the token, the railway aims to make fraudulent practices significantly more difficult.
This initiative is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience by fostering discipline at reservation counters and reducing the chaos of early morning queues.
Online Booking Updates
Alongside the counter system changes, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) continues to allow Tatkal ticket bookings via its website and app. However, these online bookings are exclusively available to users whose accounts are authenticated with Aadhaar.
