Tata Sons Narrows Chairman Search to Narendran, Agrawal, Chauhan for 2027 Succession

· · 3 min read

Tata Sons, the holding company of the $275-billion Tata Group, has reportedly shortlisted three candidates to succeed Chairman N Chandrasekaran in February 2027. T V Narendran, Saurabh Agrawal, and Ashish Chauhan are in contention for the top leadership role.

Tata Sons, the influential holding company of the vast $275-billion Tata Group, is reportedly narrowing its search for a new chairman as current leader N Chandrasekaran prepares to step down in February 2027. Sources familiar with the process indicate that three prominent corporate figures are now in contention for the top leadership position.

Key Contenders Emerge for Tata Sons Chairman Role

The shortlisted candidates include T V Narendran, the seasoned CEO and MD of Tata Steel; Saurabh Agrawal, the current Executive Director and Group CFO of Tata Sons; and Ashish Chauhan, the MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

T V Narendran: The Internal Frontrunner

  • Narendran, a Tata Steel veteran since 1988, has over three decades of experience within the group.
  • He has successfully led the steelmaker for over a decade, navigating complex commodity cycles and significant capital expenditures, including challenges in its European operations.
  • His extensive experience, however, is largely concentrated within Tata Steel, which some sources note gives him less direct exposure to the broader capital allocation strategies of the holding company.

Saurabh Agrawal: Financial Expertise at the Forefront

  • Agrawal joined Tata Sons in 2017 as Group CFO and now serves as Executive Director and Group CFO.
  • His responsibilities encompass critical areas like capital allocation, investment management, and portfolio optimization across the diverse conglomerate.
  • With a background in investment banking (DSP Merrill Lynch, Standard Chartered) and a strategic role at Aditya Birla Group, Agrawal's financial acumen could be crucial as Tata Group embarks on substantial investments in sectors like aviation, semiconductors, and electric mobility.

Ashish Chauhan: The Capital Markets Dark Horse

  • Chauhan offers a unique blend of experience spanning technology, finance, and institutional leadership within capital markets.
  • He played a pivotal role in establishing the NSE in the 1990s, later headed the Bombay Stock Exchange, and returned to lead the NSE as MD and CEO in 2022.
  • While his expertise in navigating regulatory environments and transforming large institutions is notable, leading a conglomerate as diverse as Tata Sons, with over 30 businesses, would mark a significant shift from his capital markets focus.

Challenges Await the New Leader

The successor to N Chandrasekaran will inherit a complex landscape of strategic initiatives and challenges. These include the ambitious expansion plans for Air India, the significant push into semiconductor manufacturing, overseeing the technology transition within TCS, and addressing the long-pending question of a potential Tata Sons listing.

N Chandrasekaran, who assumed the chairmanship in 2017 and is currently in his second five-year term, announced last month that he would not seek reappointment. His tenure is set to conclude on February 20, 2027. The selection process is ongoing, with the Tata Sons board and the trusts controlling the holding company playing crucial roles in the final decision.
