Tata Motors Launches Aeris Sedan at ₹5.29 Lakh, Targets Personal Buyers

· · 3 min read

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has launched the Aeris compact sedan, starting at ₹5.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Replacing the Tigor, the Aeris aims to capture a larger share of India's growing entry sedan market, with deliveries beginning October 11, 2026.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has officially unveiled the Aeris, a new compact sedan designed to succeed the Tigor. Launched on Friday, September 25, 2026, with an introductory price of ₹5.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the petrol variant, the Aeris marks Tata Motors' strong commitment to expanding its presence in India's entry sedan segment.

Focus on Personal Car Buyers

The Aeris will be exclusively sold to personal car buyers, a deliberate strategy to differentiate it from fleet operations, which will continue to utilize the existing Xpres-T model. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, highlighted this focus, noting that personal buyers constitute approximately 65% of the 3.4-lakh-unit compact-sedan market annually.

Chandra explained the rationale behind the launch, stating, "There is a section of customers who have been looking for a compact sedan but have moved to SUVs because the current compact sedan might not have met their requirements of contemporariness and modernity. That’s the opportunity we want to tap." Deliveries for the new Aeris are scheduled to commence on October 11, 2026.

Market Strategy Amidst SUV Dominance

Despite the overall trend favoring SUVs, the compact sedan segment in India remains substantial, accounting for around 3.4 lakh units annually within an overall sedan market of approximately 4 lakh vehicles. This segment represents about 7% of the total industry volume and has seen significant growth, expanding by about 25% in the last year alone.

Tata Motors believes there's a critical mass of demand to justify new offerings. Chandra added, "The competition intensity in the sedan segment is much less compared to SUVs," suggesting a strategic advantage in a less crowded market space.

Advanced Features and Powertrains

The Aeris comes equipped with a suite of modern features aimed at enhancing comfort, convenience, and safety:

  • 10.25-inch infotainment system
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • 360-degree camera
  • Ventilated seats
  • Connected-car technology
  • Wireless charging
  • Integrated dashcam recording system (described as a segment-first feature)

Initially, the Tata Aeris will be offered with petrol and CNG powertrain options. The CNG trim starts at ₹6.29 lakh. CNG vehicles have seen a sharp rise in popularity within the compact-sedan category, now making up nearly 60% of sales, compared to around 25% across the broader passenger-vehicle industry.

Future Electric Vehicle Plans

While the Aeris is configured for an electric powertrain, Tata Motors is holding off on an immediate EV launch. The company plans to wait for the electric vehicle market in the ₹8 lakh to ₹15 lakh price band to expand further. Tata Motors already leads India's EV market with three existing offerings in this price range: the Tiago EV, Punch EV, and Nexon EV.

"Electric is a possibility in the future. It has been configured for it," said Shailesh Chandra. "We will wait for the market to evolve because we have three offerings in electric between ₹8 lakh and ₹15 lakh... Right now, we would like the market size in this segment to expand before we take a call of introducing a fourth product."

This cautious approach aims to avoid cannibalizing sales from its successful existing EV portfolio.
