· · 2 min read

Under N Chandrasekaran's leadership, Tata Group's market capitalization surged nearly threefold, adding Rs 15.13 lakh crore since February 2017. This significant growth to Rs 23.35 lakh crore by August 2026 was driven by major gains from TCS, Titan, and Tata Steel.

Mumbai, India – During N Chandrasekaran's tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons, the market capitalization of the Tata Group's listed companies experienced a remarkable near-threefold increase, adding a staggering Rs 15.13 lakh crore to its value. This substantial growth highlights a period of significant expansion and investor confidence under his stewardship.

Chandrasekaran, who took charge on February 21, 2017, oversaw an ascent from a collective market cap of Rs 8.22 lakh crore to Rs 23.35 lakh crore by August 12, 2026. This represents a 2.83-fold rise in the group's valuation across 23 listed entities, excluding more recent listings like Tata Capital and Tata Technologies, and the demerged Tata Motors.

Key Contributors to Market Cap Growth

Several Tata Group companies were instrumental in driving this impressive market cap growth. Leading the charge were:

  • Titan Company: Added Rs 4.12 lakh crore
  • TCS (Tata Consultancy Services): Contributed Rs 3.64 lakh crore
  • Tata Steel: Saw an addition of Rs 1.83 lakh crore
  • Trent: Gained Rs 1.5 lakh crore

Collectively, these top performers, alongside others like Tata Power (Rs 98,036 crore), Tata Consumer (Rs 96,099 crore), and Indian Hotels (Rs 90,343 crore), accounted for the vast majority of the overall increase. While most companies thrived, some, like Tata Chemicals, Tata Elxsi, Tata Communications, and Voltas, recorded more modest gains during the period.

Exceptional Stock Returns

Beyond overall market capitalization, several stocks delivered exceptional returns for investors under Chandrasekaran's leadership. Noteworthy performers in terms of percentage returns included:

  • Trent: A phenomenal 1651% return
  • Nelco: Surged by 1141%
  • Tata Investment Corporation: Recorded 1049% growth
  • Titan Company: Posted a robust 1016% return

These figures underscore the strategic decisions and operational efficiencies that translated into significant shareholder value over the years.

Chandrasekaran's Departure and Market Reaction

The announcement of N Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek reappointment after his current term concludes in February 2027, tendered on August 12, 2026, prompted an immediate market reaction. On the day of the announcement, Tata Group shares collectively experienced a single-day hit, shedding Rs 47,412 crore from their market valuation. This dip reflects the market's initial apprehension regarding the leadership transition, despite the group's strong performance track record under his guidance.

Chandrasekaran's tenure has been marked by significant strategic initiatives and a focus on digital transformation, contributing to the group's robust financial health and enhanced global standing.
