Tata Elxsi Shares Climb After Pact with Sarla Aviation for Shunya eVTOL Aircraft

· · 2 min read

Tata Elxsi shares climbed after signing an MoU with Sarla Aviation to develop the Shunya, a six-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Tata Elxsi will provide engineering support for avionics and certification.

Shares of Tata Elxsi Ltd. saw a notable rise in early trading today following the announcement of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarla Aviation. The collaboration aims to advance the development of Sarla Aviation's ambitious 'Shunya' project, a six-seater plus one pilot electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Under the terms of the partnership, Tata Elxsi will lend its extensive engineering expertise to various critical aspects of the Shunya aircraft. This includes comprehensive support for avionics, covering flight control systems, software integration, rigorous testing, verification, validation, and ultimately, certification processes. Sarla Aviation will spearhead the overall design, development, and type certification of the Shunya platform.

The Shunya eVTOL Aircraft: Innovation in Air Mobility

The Shunya aircraft is engineered for an impressive flight range exceeding 300 kilometers. Its design integrates the agility of vertical take-off and landing with the aerodynamic efficiency of fixed-wing cruising. This hybrid capability allows for runway-independent operations and significantly enhances propulsion efficiency, marking a step forward in advanced air mobility.

Beyond its core functionalities, Tata Elxsi's engagement with Sarla Aviation also opens avenues for supporting sensor-fusion-based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and crucial airworthiness test support for the Shunya. The companies have set an ambitious target for the Shunya aircraft's first flight within the next 18 to 24 months, with certification activities to follow.

Industry Leaders Comment on the Partnership

Adrian Schmidt, Co-Founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, expressed optimism about the collaboration. "Tata Elxsi's experience in complex aerospace systems gives us access to capabilities that are critical as we take Shunya from concept to reality," Schmidt stated.

Manoj Raghavan, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Elxsi, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative potential of advanced air mobility. "Advanced air mobility is no different, and Sarla Aviation's vision for Shunya reflects the ambition driving this transformation," Raghavan remarked. He added that the partnership provides significant opportunities to apply Tata Elxsi's broad expertise across aerospace, mobility, and digital technologies to new aviation platforms.

The partnership's scope extends beyond the initial Shunya project, with expectations that it will bolster capabilities relevant to future applications in logistics, air ambulance services, and defence-related sectors, indicating a long-term strategic alliance in the evolving aerial mobility landscape.
