TARIL Enters Nuclear Power Sector with Major NPCIL Order for Kaiga Project

· · 2 min read

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Ltd (TARIL) has secured its first nuclear power sector order from NPCIL for generator transformers at the Kaiga Units 5 & 6 project in Karnataka. This significant contract strengthens TARIL's position in critical power infrastructure.

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Ltd (TARIL) has announced its entry into India's nuclear power sector after securing a crucial order from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). The contract involves supplying generator transformers for the Kaiga Units 5 & 6 nuclear power project, located in Karnataka.

According to a filing with the BSE on Monday, this marks TARIL's inaugural order within the nuclear energy domain. The order was received from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), a key player in large-scale infrastructure projects.

Kaiga Project: Boosting India's Nuclear Capacity

The Kaiga Units 5 & 6 project encompasses two indigenous 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) developed by NPCIL. These reactors are integral to India's ambitious 700 MW PHWR program, designed to enhance the nation's energy security and reduce its carbon footprint. Once operational, the two units are projected to add a substantial 1,400 MW of nuclear generation capacity to the Kaiga site.

The generator transformers provided by TARIL will be essential components of the project's electrical infrastructure. Their primary function will be to facilitate the evacuation of power generated by the nuclear units and ensure its seamless integration into the national transmission network.

Strategic Importance for TARIL and National Energy Goals

Satyen Mamtora, Managing Director & CEO of Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Ltd, expressed pride in this milestone. "We are proud to mark our entry into the nuclear power sector with this order for NPCIL," Mamtora stated. He emphasized nuclear energy's vital role in supporting India’s long-term energy security and clean energy ambitions.

Mamtora highlighted the order as a strong validation of the trust placed in TARIL’s technology, engineering capabilities, and its proven ability to deliver equipment for highly critical power applications. The company aims to leverage its established expertise in high-voltage transformer manufacturing to support India's expanding nuclear energy ecosystem and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which prioritizes strengthening indigenous capabilities and building a self-reliant energy infrastructure.

This contract further solidifies TARIL's positioning within the critical and high-value power infrastructure segment. Following the announcement, TARIL shares saw a positive movement, trading up 2.87 percent at Rs 312.30 on the BSE.
