Suvendu Adhikari Appoints Subrata Gupta as Advisor: Unpacking the IAS Officer's Career

· · 2 min read

Newly sworn-in West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has appointed retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta as his advisor. Gupta, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, previously played a key role in the Nano car project land acquisition and led Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation.

Hours after taking the oath as West Bengal's Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari announced the appointment of retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta as his advisor. This strategic move brings a seasoned bureaucrat with extensive experience in both state and central government roles into the new administration.

Who is Subrata Gupta?

Subrata Gupta, a native of West Bengal and a 1990-batch IAS officer from the state cadre, boasts a distinguished career marked by diverse responsibilities. He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and holds an MBA from London, combining technical expertise with administrative acumen.

Prior to his advisory role, Gupta served as the Special Election Observer for the recently concluded Assembly elections, overseeing voter list revisions in West Bengal. His career spans significant tenures under both Left Front and Trinamool Congress (TMC) governments, where he managed 27 different departments.

Key Roles and Contributions

During the Left Front government, Gupta held the position of Managing Director of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC). In this capacity, he was instrumental in the land acquisition process for the contentious Tata Nano car project in Singur.

Later, Gupta led the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) from 2012-2013. Under his leadership, the Kolkata Metro initiated work on India's first underwater metro project, a significant infrastructure milestone. He was the Managing Director of KMRCL when construction began at Howrah Maidan.

Central Government Service and State-Level Challenges

In October 2024, Gupta transitioned to the central government, where he was appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, a position he held until his retirement in May 2025.

His tenure at KMRCL and other state departments was not without challenges. Allegations surfaced that the Mamata Banerjee-led government did not provide adequate support to Gupta, reportedly transferring him to less prominent departments like State Horticulture and Food Processing, while junior officers were assigned more critical portfolios. These moves, occurring around 2020, reportedly caused discontent within the West Bengal bureaucracy.

Despite these past challenges, Subrata Gupta's extensive experience and deep understanding of West Bengal's administrative landscape are now set to play a crucial role in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's new government.
