Indian stock markets are bracing for a turbulent week as investors eye critical global developments. Key factors expected to dictate market movement include fluctuating crude oil prices, ongoing geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran, and the highly anticipated policy outlook from the US Federal Reserve.
Crude Oil Prices Surge Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Crude oil prices have seen a significant spike, rising over 3% to $103 per barrel after Iran-backed rebels reportedly struck a crucial pipeline in Saudi Arabia. This surge, coupled with escalating US-Iran hostilities, poses a substantial inflationary risk. While the Indian equity market was closed on Friday for Ganesh Chaturthi, the impact of these elevated oil prices is expected to be felt directly this week.
US Federal Reserve's Policy Meeting Looms
The US Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to meet on September 15-16. Financial institutions like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan anticipate a 25-basis-point interest rate hike, which would bring the target federal funds rate range to 3.75%–4.0%. A hawkish stance from the Fed could impact foreign investment flows into emerging markets, including India, further adding to market uncertainty.
Market Performance and Expert Commentary
Last week marked the fifth consecutive weekly decline for the Indian market. On Friday, the Sensex dropped 120.83 points (0.16%) to close at 74,781.76, while the Nifty index fell 79.70 points (0.34%) to 23,398.10. However, both indices showed recovery from their intraday lows.
Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking, commented, "The market enters the week with a cautious bias, as crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and the US Federal Reserve’s policy outlook remain key determinants of near-term direction. A sustained rise in crude oil prices could further pressure inflation expectations, the rupee and corporate margins, while a hawkish Fed stance could weigh on foreign flows and emerging-market sentiment." He advised investors to adopt a selective approach, focusing on companies with strong balance sheets and resilient earnings.
From a technical perspective, Sudeep Shah, Vice President- Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, noted bearish indicators. "Both the daily and weekly RSI remain in negative territory and continue to trend lower, while the daily MACD maintains a bearish stance," Shah stated. He identified the 75500-75600 zone as a significant resistance, suggesting that a sustained move below this level could lead to further declines towards 74000 and 73400.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments, highlighted a "dense macro calendar" this week, including US and domestic inflation prints and policy decisions from both the Fed and the Bank of Japan. He cautioned that elevated energy prices, foreign outflows, and geopolitical uncertainty would keep volatility high, but suggested that "resilient domestic fundamentals and strong institutional support could continue to attract buying at lower levels and contain the downside." Nair recommended booking partial profits in overvalued segments and redeploying into defensive and deep-value stocks.
Investor Outlook
Given the confluence of global and domestic factors, investors are advised to exercise caution and prioritize robust risk management strategies. The market's direction will largely hinge on how these key geopolitical and monetary policy developments unfold throughout the week.
