Sridhar Vembu: Why Udhayanidhi Stalin's Sanatana Dharma Attacks Lack Tamil Outrage

· · 2 min read

Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu explains that Udhayanidhi Stalin's repeated attacks on "Sanatana Dharma" fail to spark widespread outrage among Tamil Hindus due to a language barrier. Vembu argues the term is not commonly associated with Hinduism by many in Tamil Nadu.

Sridhar Vembu's Linguistic Explanation for Limited Outrage

Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu has offered a unique perspective on why Udhayanidhi Stalin's criticisms of "Sanatana Dharma" have not ignited stronger outrage among the religious Tamil Hindu population. Vembu, a prominent tech entrepreneur, attributes this to a fundamental linguistic disconnect within Tamil Nadu.

According to Vembu, the word "sanathanam" (eternal in English) is not in regular use in the Tamil language, and many people in the state do not immediately associate it with Hinduism. He pointed out that he himself did not know the word as a child, highlighting its unfamiliarity to the average Tamil speaker.

The Impact of Terminology on Public Reaction

Vembu contrasted the Tamil usage with Hindi, where "Sanatan Dharam" directly and widely refers to Hinduism. He argued that if Udhayanidhi Stalin had used more commonly understood Tamil words like "dharmam" or "aram"—terms culturally rooted and effectively meaning "Hindu dharam"—the public reaction would have been significantly more forceful.

The tech veteran suggested that Udhayanidhi Stalin may be intentionally selecting the word "sanathanam" precisely because of its limited recognition in Tamil. However, Vembu also noted that these repeated attacks are inadvertently making the word more known, potentially broadening opposition to the ruling DMK party.

DMK's Historical Stance and Political Repercussions

Vembu further elaborated on the political landscape, recalling that the DMK's historical attacks on Hindu deities have consistently fueled anti-DMK sentiment in Tamil Nadu. He asserted that the party has never secured a majority on its own due to this strong underlying opposition.

He believes Udhayanidhi Stalin's recent comments are only exacerbating this existing anti-DMK current, potentially expanding the already significant opposition vote base within the state.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's Continued Criticisms

Vembu's remarks follow Udhayanidhi Stalin's recent address as Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where he reiterated his call for the "abolition" of Sanatana Dharma. He stated, "Sanatana Dharma, which divides the people, must certainly be abolished."

These recent statements echo similar remarks made by the DMK leader in September 2023, which had previously triggered considerable political backlash, protests from pro-Hindu groups, and multiple legal challenges.
