Marvel's latest blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is experiencing a significant slowdown at the Indian box office as it enters its third weekend. Despite a historic run that saw it dominate theaters for its first two weeks, the film's collections are now being impacted by the arrival of major Bollywood releases, Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947.
Historic Run for Spider-Man
The Tom Holland-led Marvel film opened strongly on July 30 and quickly became one of India's biggest theatrical attractions. By Day 17, Spider-Man: Brand New Day had amassed a net collection of ₹447.82 crore and a gross collection of ₹535.37 crore across India. Its initial performance was remarkable, with a net collection of ₹334.75 crore in Week 1, followed by another ₹108.65 crore in Week 2, bringing its two-week total to ₹443.40 crore net.
The film's appeal has been widespread, with the English version contributing ₹244.56 crore to the net total, and the Hindi version adding ₹162.27 crore, alongside significant contributions from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions.
New Bollywood Films Impact Collections
However, the pace has considerably slowed in its third week. After collecting ₹5.40 crore on Day 15 and ₹3.90 crore on Day 16, live estimates for Day 17 show a sharp drop to just ₹0.52 crore net. This decline coincides with the Independence Day weekend, which saw the release of Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947.
The primary challenge for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is no longer audience interest but rather screen availability. Industry reports indicate that the new Hindi releases have taken over a significant number of prime theatrical slots. Awarapan 2, in particular, opened strongly, with its Day 1 collection estimated at around ₹27 crore, marking it as Emraan Hashmi's biggest opener.
Can Spider-Man Maintain Momentum?
Despite the recent dip, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already achieved a historic milestone, surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India. While initial projections suggested the film could finish its run at around ₹575 crore gross or more, its performance post-Independence Day weekend will be crucial.
With fewer screens and intensified competition from strong Bollywood contenders, sustaining its earlier phenomenal pace will prove challenging for the Marvel blockbuster.
