· · 2 min read

SpiceJet flight SG 939 from Delhi to Pune was delayed for over six hours and eventually canceled on July 27, 2026, due to a technical issue. Over 180 passengers were left stranded at IGI Airport, prompting anger and demands for a high-level probe.

Over 180 passengers traveling on SpiceJet flight SG 939 from Delhi to Pune experienced significant delays and eventual cancellation on the night of July 27, 2026. The incident at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) left travelers stranded for more than six hours, sparking frustration and calls for an investigation into the airline's handling of the situation.

Technical Issues Lead to Prolonged Wait

The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 9:15 p.m. with boarding set for 8:45 p.m., faced an initial delay due to a technical issue. Passengers reported being left inside the airport for hours without clear updates from SpiceJet staff, leading to a tense confrontation that required security personnel intervention.

Ramesh Chand Soni, one of the stranded passengers, took to social media platform X to voice his concerns. He shared photos of his boarding pass and urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Airports Authority of India to intervene. Soni highlighted safety questions regarding the aircraft and the lack of alternative arrangements.

“We have been stranded for several hours. The aircraft has been undergoing maintenance for hours, which raises questions about its safety. If the aircraft is not safe, it should be cancelled and an alternate arrangement should be made.”

Soni also mentioned that the prolonged wait negatively impacted his health, exacerbating his diabetic condition due to hunger and thirst.

Passenger Outrage Over Lack of Communication and Support

Passengers alleged that between 2:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., they still had no definitive information on the flight's status. They also claimed that no proper food or drink arrangements were made during the ordeal, despite the extensive delay. Many demanded a high-level probe by the civil aviation ministry and DGCA into the airline’s alleged mismanagement.

SpiceJet's Response

A spokesperson for SpiceJet confirmed that flight SG 939 was initially delayed due to a technical issue and subsequently canceled. To mitigate the inconvenience, the airline stated that it arranged an additional flight for all affected passengers. The spokesperson expressed regret for the situation, stating, “We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers.”

Calls for Improved Passenger Communication

This incident underscores the ongoing need for airlines to provide timely, transparent updates and essential passenger support during significant disruptions. Travelers emphasized that the uncertainty and lack of provisions were particularly challenging for vulnerable groups, including elderly passengers, children, and those with medical conditions, who were left waiting for hours without clear resolution.
