Sourav Joshi Claims E20 Ethanol Fuel Halves Mercedes Mileage to 5 kmpl

· · 2 min read

Indian vlogger Sourav Joshi reports his Mercedes-Benz SUV's fuel efficiency plummeted from 17 kmpl to 5 kmpl after using ethanol-blended petrol. He blames E20 fuel, sparking debate despite government assurances.

Popular Indian vlogger Sourav Joshi has ignited a fresh debate over the efficacy of ethanol-blended petrol, claiming his luxury Mercedes-Benz SUV's fuel efficiency has drastically dropped. Joshi stated that his Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC (Petrol), which previously delivered 17 kilometres per litre (kmpl), now achieves only 5 kmpl.

In a recent vlog, Joshi presented live dashboard readings from his vehicle, highlighting the significant decline in mileage within just 48 hours. He further asserted that a full tank, which once provided a driving range of approximately 800 kilometres, now offers only about 480 kilometres. Based in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, Joshi explicitly attributed this issue to the ethanol-blended fuel sold at petrol stations, expressing concern about potential damage to his expensive vehicle.

Government Dismisses E20 Fuel Concerns

Joshi's viral claims come amidst ongoing discussions regarding the impact of E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently dismissed such concerns, calling reports of widespread vehicle problems a "misrepresentation."

Minister Puri stated that India has been utilizing E20 petrol since April 2025, with both automobile manufacturers and consumers largely accepting the fuel. He noted that around 20 crore two-wheelers and 20 lakh four-wheelers currently operate on ethanol-blended petrol without significant issues. Puri also indicated that any decision on introducing E25 petrol would follow extensive technical tests and consultations with automakers.

Vlogger's Broader Concerns

Beyond the mileage issue, Joshi voiced concerns about maintaining premium luxury vehicles in areas outside major metropolitan cities. He mentioned that any significant problem with his Mercedes would necessitate sending it to Delhi for repairs, incurring substantial costs. Joshi also highlighted that he owns an electric Mercedes G-Wagon, which he says frees him from such fuel-related anxieties.

His vlog has since gained considerable traction across social media platforms, fueling public discussion about ethanol-blended petrol and its real-world effects on vehicle performance.
