Canadian solar technology firm Mitrex is redefining building materials with its new Solar Brick system. This innovative solution transforms conventional exterior walls into active electricity generators, offering a significant departure from traditional rooftop solar panel installations.

Understanding Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)

The Mitrex Solar Brick is a prime example of a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system. Unlike standalone solar panels, BIPV technology seamlessly combines solar cells directly into building components, such as facades. This integration allows structures to generate power while maintaining their aesthetic and architectural integrity.

Design Flexibility for New and Existing Structures

A key advantage of the Solar Brick system is its versatility for both new construction and existing buildings. For older properties, the technology can be incorporated through re-cladding or over-cladding processes, effectively converting existing walls into power-generating surfaces without extensive structural modifications.

Mitrex recently demonstrated this capability in a 59kW project spanning approximately 4,000 square feet, successfully transforming an existing building into an energy producer while preserving its original design.

High Power Output and Practical Applications

Each individual Solar Brick panel is capable of generating up to 330W of electricity. By combining multiple panels, installations can achieve substantial overall capacities. For instance, a system comprising 10 to 12 panels could yield between 3.3kW and 4kW of capacity. Such an installation has the potential to power everyday household appliances during daylight hours, depending on sunlight exposure, system size, and consumption.

Advanced Features: Glare Reduction and Low Maintenance

The Solar Brick system incorporates a patented coating designed to mitigate excessive glare from sunlight. This anti-reflective surface also serves a practical purpose by helping to prevent dust, dirt, and other debris from easily accumulating on the panels. This feature significantly reduces the maintenance requirements compared to surfaces that demand frequent cleaning.

Mitrex emphasizes the adaptability of its Solar Brick system to diverse architectural and construction needs. The technology offers customizable facing layers, various panel sizes, and different backing options.
