Shankar Sharma: India Offers Multibagger Stocks But Don't Call Market Bottom Yet

· · 2 min read

Shankar Sharma, founder of GQuant, states India is a market for multibagger stocks but cautions against premature declarations of a market bottom. He anticipates a period of tepid returns for the broader market, advising common investors to consider fixed deposits or gold.

Veteran market investor Shankar Sharma, founder of GQuant, believes it is too early to declare a definitive bottom in the Indian stock market. While acknowledging India's potential for "multibagger stocks" – those that yield returns multiples of their initial cost – Sharma warns that significant challenges remain for the broader market.

Caution Amidst Intermittent Rallies

Sharma attributed recent market gains to specific events, such as the listing of Jio Platforms, strong results from Reliance Industries, and a moderation in oil prices. However, he emphasized that these isolated positive developments should not be mistaken for the onset of a new bull market. "There are still plenty of speed bumps ahead. So I don't think we are out of the woods yet," he stated, anticipating a period of "very tepid returns" for the market over the next couple of years, despite intermittent rallies.

For the average investor, Sharma suggested traditional investment avenues like fixed deposits (FDs) and gold could be more suitable during this anticipated lull in the Indian equity market.

Multibagger Opportunities for Committed Investors

Despite his cautious outlook on the overall market, Sharma sees substantial opportunities for investors with the expertise and dedication to identify promising individual stocks. He described India as a prime market for those seeking multibagger returns, provided they possess the necessary skills.

Sharma stressed that successful stock market investing demands a full-time commitment and considerable experience. He cautioned that it might not be appropriate for individuals juggling regular jobs, professions, or businesses. Instead, he believes full-time market professionals with a deep understanding of equity dynamics are better positioned to capitalize on the opportunities available. "If you are a good stock picker, then India is the market for multibaggers," Sharma reiterated.
