Sensex, Nifty Recover from Intraday Lows on Expiry Day Amid Global Cautions

· · 3 min read

Indian equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, recouped losses on Tuesday's expiry day, closing at 72,529.07 and 22,716.20 respectively, after hitting significant intraday lows. The market outlook remains cautious due to global bond yields and persistent foreign fund outflows.

Indian equity markets experienced a volatile session on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, with key benchmarks Sensex and Nifty extending declines before staging a notable recovery from their intraday lows. Despite the rebound, analysts maintained a cautious stance on the market's immediate future, citing a confluence of global and domestic pressures.

Market Performance Overview

The 30-share BSE Sensex concluded the day down 242.65 points, or 0.33 per cent, settling at 72,529.07. Earlier in the session, the index had plunged to an intraday low of 72,064. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 index dipped 64.05 points, or 0.28 per cent, to close at 22,716.20, after touching a low of 22,569.65. Notably, the Nifty briefly slipped below its critical 200-week moving average of 22,607 before finding support and recovering.

Broader market indices also faced significant pressure, with both the midcap and smallcap segments declining by approximately 1 per cent each. Sectorally, selling was widespread, impacting realty, IT, and auto stocks particularly hard. In contrast, metal and pharma sectors showed resilience, closing with gains.

Factors Driving Market Volatility

The continued selling pressure in the Indian equity market is attributed to several global and domestic factors. Elevated global bond yields, a weakening rupee against the dollar, and consistent outflows by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been primary concerns for market participants. The ongoing monthly expiry day also contributed to intraday volatility.

Analysts highlighted that rising crude oil prices, firm US 10-year Treasury yields, and a hawkish global monetary policy backdrop, suggesting potential for further rate hikes, are weighing heavily on investor sentiment. Additionally, an unprecedented pace of IPO fundraising is absorbing incremental market liquidity, further contributing to subdued risk appetite.

Analyst Insights and Outlook

Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, noted that markets remained under pressure, extending a corrective trend. He stated, “Global concerns continued to weigh on sentiment, with crude prices remaining elevated, the US 10-year Treasury yield staying firm and the rupee witnessing fresh weakness amid continued foreign fund outflows. However, oversold conditions and expiry-related activity triggered some recovery from the day's lows, limiting the overall decline.” Mishra advised a cautious view, suggesting investors monitor key index levels for directional cues.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, echoed similar sentiments, pointing to volatile crude prices, near two-decade high US Treasury yields, and persistent FII outflows as major headwinds. He added, “Investor risk appetite remains subdued against a hawkish global backdrop amid rising odds of additional rate hikes later in the year.” Nair suggested that while geopolitical tensions continue to shape near-term sentiment, market focus is gradually shifting towards Q2 earnings, with expectations already tempered.

From a technical perspective, Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, identified the 22,570–22,550 zone as immediate support for the Nifty. A decisive break below this level could lead to further selling towards 22,400. On the upside, 22,900–22,930 is seen as an immediate hurdle, with a sustained move above it potentially extending the pullback towards 23,050. However, Shah cautioned that the broader market structure remains weak without sustained buying traction.
