Sensex, Nifty Rally as FM Sitharaman Considers LTCG Tax Removal, Debates STT

· · 2 min read

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty rallied after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated the government would consider removing the Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax and welcomed a debate on the Securities Transaction Tax (STT). These remarks, alongside falling crude prices and strong IT stock performance, significantly boosted market sentiment.

Indian benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, extended their morning gains significantly today following a key statement from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Finance Minister indicated that the government would keenly consider demands for the removal of the Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax. She also expressed that a debate on the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) would be healthy.

During the afternoon trading session, the Sensex surged by 855 points to close at 72,785, while the Nifty climbed 275 points to reach 22,632. These remarks were made by the Finance Minister during her address at the Bloomberg Economic Forum, providing a strong positive impetus to investor sentiment.

Market Drivers Beyond Tax Remarks

While the Finance Minister's comments were a primary catalyst, several other factors contributed to the broader market rally. The India VIX, a key volatility index for the NSE, notably slipped by 8% in the afternoon session, indicating a reduction in market fear.

Crude Oil Prices and IT Sector Boost

  • Falling Crude Prices: Brent crude prices saw a decline, dropping below $106 a barrel in Asian trade. This reversed a three-day upward trend and offered relief to the Indian market, which is a major oil importer. Benchmark US crude also fell by 1.5% to $92.34 a barrel.
  • IT Stock Rally: The information technology sector witnessed a strong surge, particularly driven by robust earnings from HCL Technologies, which jumped over 8% to Rs 1321.55. Other major IT firms like TCS, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys also saw gains of up to 6%, emerging as top performers across both the Sensex and Nifty. This rally was also sentimentally boosted by a selloff in South Korea’s Kospi index, impacted by declines in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, shifting some investor focus.

IMF Boosts India's Growth Outlook

Further bolstering market confidence, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed strong optimism about India’s economic trajectory. The IMF revised its growth forecast for the financial year 2026-27 upwards to 7%, a significant increase from its previous estimate of 6.4% made in July. This improved outlook underscores the resilience of India's economy, driven by robust domestic demand and strong services sector activity, despite ongoing global uncertainties.

The combination of potential tax policy shifts, favorable global commodity trends, strong corporate earnings, and a positive international economic forecast created a powerful upward momentum in the Indian equity markets today.
