Sensex, Nifty Fall as Brent Crude Tops $83 Amid Hormuz Strait Tensions

· · 2 min read

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, opened lower on Friday as Brent crude prices surged past $83 per barrel. Global market sentiment weakened due to uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz after Iran reviewed a bill to restrict vessel passage.

Indian benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, commenced Friday's trading session significantly lower, reflecting a downturn in global market sentiment. The decline was primarily triggered by Brent crude oil prices surpassing the $83 per barrel mark overnight, exacerbated by escalating geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

The Sensex registered a fall of 260 points, settling at 78,692, while the Nifty 50 shed 33 points to reach 24,603. This market correction pushed the total market capitalization of BSE-listed firms to Rs 493.40 lakh crore.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Oil Prices Higher

The sudden 3% surge in Brent crude prices is directly linked to renewed uncertainty over the critical Strait of Hormuz shipping route. Iran is reportedly reviewing a proposed bill that could restrict the passage of US and Israeli vessels through the strait. This development has sparked concerns among global investors, given the strait's strategic importance as a conduit for nearly one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade.

The geopolitical backdrop includes the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which initially began in late February. Any disruption to this vital waterway has immediate and significant implications for global energy markets and, consequently, broader economic stability.

Global Markets React to Uncertainty

The ripple effect of these tensions was evident across international markets. US indices concluded Thursday's trading session in negative territory. Similarly, Asian markets experienced considerable selling pressure, with Japan's Nikkei index dropping 626 points and Taiwan's Weighted index declining by 133 points.

Sectoral Performance and Key Movers

Despite the overall downward trend in the Indian market, certain sectors showed resilience. The BSE IT index, for instance, gained 441 points, closing at 30,398, lending some support to the benchmark indices.

Among the top performers on the Sensex were IT majors such as TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, and Infosys, alongside NTPC, with shares rising up to 2.36%.

Conversely, several prominent stocks faced significant losses. Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Trent, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, and Eternal shares were among the top Sensex losers, experiencing declines of up to 4.53%.

Market Outlook Amid Volatility

Market analysts are closely monitoring the developments in the Middle East, as the situation in the Strait of Hormuz could continue to dictate crude oil prices and, by extension, global market sentiment. Investors are advised to exercise caution amidst the prevailing volatility driven by these geopolitical factors.
