Indian equity markets witnessed a significant downturn on Wednesday, retracting initial gains following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to increase the benchmark repo rate. The central bank hiked the rate by 25 basis points (bps), pushing it to 5.5%, a move that ended a two-day upward trend for the key indices.
Indian Equities Retreat After Rate Adjustment
The 30-share BSE Sensex concluded the day down 429.11 points, or 0.59%, settling at 72,638.70. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty index experienced a decline of 173.05 points, or 0.76%, closing at 22,603.05. This adjustment marks the RBI's first rate hike in nearly four years, signaling a shift in its monetary policy stance.
Key Market Movements
Sectoral performance was varied, with metal stocks leading the drag. Realty, auto, IT, and consumer sectors also faced selling pressure. Conversely, public sector undertaking (PSU) banks and media companies managed to close with modest gains. Broader market indices showed a mixed trend; the Nifty Midcap100 dropped by 0.63%, while the Nifty Smallcap100 saw a slight gain of 0.30%.
Expert Analysis on Market Sentiment
Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, noted that markets reversed recent gains amid volatility driven by both domestic and global factors. He highlighted that while the RBI's anticipated rate hike initially supported rate-sensitive sectors like banking due to a stronger growth outlook, sentiment later softened. This shift was attributed to investors' concerns about a higher inflation outlook and the RBI's move towards a 'calibrated tightening' stance.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, echoed this, emphasizing that the market reacted sharply to the RBI's shift in policy stance, indicating a turn in the rate cycle. He added that despite upward revisions to growth projections, the higher inflation outlook and RBI's focus on price stability tempered overall sentiment.
Global and Domestic Headwinds
Several external factors also contributed to the market's cautious mood. Global macro concerns, including Brent crude oil prices rebounding above $101 a barrel, continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, elevated global bond yields, and a weakening rupee against a stronger dollar, all added pressure. The anticipation of the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting further intensified investor caution.
Ankur Punj, Managing Director at Equirus Wealth, pointed out that the central bank's hawkish stance suggests potential for further rate hikes. This, combined with a prolonged geopolitical conflict and persistently high crude oil prices, could negatively impact growth prospects in the medium to long term.
Outlook for Investors
Looking ahead, market participants will keenly focus on the September-quarter earnings season for fresh direction. While a resilient macroeconomic backdrop supports headline expectations, investors will closely monitor management commentary. This includes assessing companies' abilities to absorb rising input costs, maintain pricing power, and sustain demand throughout the second half of the fiscal year.
Nifty Technical Levels
Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, identified the 22,460–22,440 zone as immediate support for the Nifty. A decisive break below this level could trigger further correction towards 22,300. On the upside, 22,730–22,750 is seen as an immediate hurdle, with a sustained move above it potentially extending the rally towards 22,900. Shah concluded that the broader market structure remains cautious.
