Indian equity markets experienced a decline on Monday, October 12, 2026, with both the Sensex and Nifty indices giving up early gains. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 556.36 points (0.77%) to close at 71,915.97, while the NSE Nifty index fell 150.60 points (0.67%) to 22,370.15. Broader indices like Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 remained largely stable.
Key Factors Behind the Market Downturn
Analysts attributed the market's fall to a confluence of external headwinds. Elevated crude oil prices, persistently high US bond yields, and continuous selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were identified as the primary culprits impacting investor sentiment.
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that external factors are currently overshadowing domestic positives. He anticipates continued FII selling in the near term, with domestic institutional investors (DIIs) likely to absorb much of this pressure. Vijayakumar highlighted that Indian equities have been among the worst-performing markets year-to-date due to these headwinds. However, he suggested that the recent correction has made valuations in several segments fair and attractive for medium-to-long-term investors, citing an estimated GDP growth of 7.1% for FY27 and improving corporate profitability as fundamental supports. A significant drop in crude oil prices, he added, could trigger a market rally.
Sectoral Outlook and Opportunities
Market expert Neeraj Dewan, speaking to Business Today, identified several sectors that could attract buying interest following recent corrections. He sees value in select banking stocks, noting that the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) interest rate hike could initially support banks' net interest margins (NIMs). Dewan also pointed to automobiles, real estate, metals, infrastructure, and engineering stocks as potential areas for accumulation.
While pharma stocks have outperformed recently, Dewan does not expect a similar upside rally from current levels, though they may remain relatively strong.
IT Sector: Awaiting Sustained Recovery
Regarding information technology (IT) stocks, Dewan observed that Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) latest results were better than market expectations, leading to some short covering in IT shares. However, he cautioned against anticipating a sustained rally without clearer signs of growth. Investors, he stated, will closely monitor how artificial intelligence (AI) contributes to revenue and earnings, and whether international order inflows improve before concluding a sustained recovery is underway.
Nifty Technical Levels and Market Sentiment
Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice-President (Research) at Bajaj Broking, highlighted that while the Nifty's rebound after an eight-week losing streak was encouraging, the modest gains are insufficient to confirm a sustained recovery. He indicated that a move above 22,600 could pave the way for recovery towards 22,800 and 23,100. Conversely, failure to breach 22,600 could keep the index within a corrective consolidation range of 22,200–22,600.
Deven Choksey, Managing Director of DRChoksey Finserv, characterized the recent market decline as driven more by a lack of buying interest and increased selling pressure rather than panic. He suggested that if the Nifty quickly falls to 21,800, it could signal the final stage of the current correction.
